Very fine hairline cracks in a Tadelakt Finish are not uncommon and generally do not affect the waterproofing performance of the system when the substrate has been properly prepared. However, small aesthetic cracks can be repaired using a careful filling and resealing technique.
Understanding Hairline Cracks
Hairline cracks typically occur as part of the natural curing and movement of lime plaster. These micro-cracks do not compromise the integrity or water repellency of a properly built Tadelakt system. Repairs are mainly performed for aesthetic improvement.
Fine cracks can be visually minimized without removing or reapplying the full system.
Maintaining a continuous sealed surface ensures long-term performance.
Repair Technique for Hairline Cracks
Prepare a fine paste. Take a small amount of the wet mixed original Tadelakt plaster (same batch or color when possible). Squeeze it through a standard paint strainer to remove all coarse aggregate. The result should be a smooth, fine paste suitable for filling micro-cracks.
Fill the crack. Using a gloved finger, gently press the fine paste into the crack. Apply as little as possible to the surrounding area to minimize cleanup.
Remove excess material. Use a soft plastic scraper (a credit card works well) to remove excess paste from around the crack. Work carefully to avoid scratching or dulling the surrounding polished surface.
Smooth the area. If residue remains, allow the repair to dry completely, then use a dry, soft cloth to gently buff away any excess.
Re-seal with Olive Oil Soap. Once the repair has dried, apply three coats of diluted Olive Oil Soap Sealer over the repaired area. Allow each coat to absorb and dry before applying the next.
Apply protective Beeswax Sealer. After the Olive Oil Soap has fully dried, apply two coats of Beeswax Protective Sealer to restore the hydrophobic protection and visual continuity.
