Timing Is Critical
The polishing process must begin at precisely the right moment — when the plaster has set enough to resist indentation but is still soft enough to close under trowel pressure.
Signs the timing is wrong:
Too early: The trowel sinks into the surface, leaving marks and dragging the material. The surface feels soft and the plaster smears.
Too late: The surface feels hard and dry; the trowel skips and cannot compress the plaster. The finish appears rough or chalky.
How to find the right window:
The plaster should feel firm but slightly cool and damp to the touch.
The surface should accept trowel pressure without dragging.
Start with light passes and increase pressure as the plaster continues to firm up.
Common Mistakes and Fixes
Waiting too long: Work in smaller sections to avoid missing the polishing window.
Dirty or rough trowel: A trowel with residue or nicks will leave marks. Keep it clean and smooth.
