If you're asking whether you need to prime before applying Earthaus Lime Slurry, the answer depends entirely on the type of substrate. Lime Slurry bonds differently to primed versus porous surfaces. When Primer Is Required
On non-porous, sealed, or previously painted surfaces, Earthaus Lime Slurry requires a primer to create an even, receptive base for adhesion. Lime Slurry does not absorb into these surfaces without it.
Use a primer when applying over:
Drywall (Level-4 finish, primed with latex or PVA primer)
Existing painted walls
Painted or sealed interior masonry (brick, concrete block, or stone)
Why it matters: primer provides a mechanical key for the Lime Slurry to bond to, reducing the risk of lap lines, uneven color absorption, or early surface failure.
Note: Earthaus does not manufacture a primer. Any zero- or low-VOC latex or PVA primer is suitable for use under Lime Slurry. Applying Lime Slurry over a primed surface is the rare case — most applications are over porous masonry and use no primer at all — but whenever you do prime, add Earthaus Primer Grit (1 cup per gallon) to the primer to improve mechanical adhesion.
When Primer Is Not Required
Lime Slurry naturally adheres to and bonds with porous, unpainted mineral substrates. These surfaces allow moisture exchange and create a strong mineral-to-mineral bond.
Primer is not required for:
Brick, stone, or concrete block (unsealed and unpainted)
Lime or cement stucco
Lime, clay, or gypsum plaster
Earthen substrates such as adobe, cob, or compressed earth block (CEB)

Key Application Tips
On porous surfaces, lightly dampen the substrate before applying Lime Slurry to prevent flash drying and ensure strong adhesion.
On primed walls, maintain a wet edge to avoid lap lines or streaks.
Apply two thin coats for complete coverage and matte uniformity.
Avoid applying on hot, dry, or unprepared surfaces, which can lead to dusting or poor bonding.
