Logging Waste in Edify

Updated this week

Overview

Logging waste in Edify tracks the cost of discarded products and menu items, which is accounted for in your COGS reporting. Accurate waste tracking helps reduce variances and gives you visibility into where your stock is going.

Logging Waste

How to log waste

  1. Navigate to Waste & Transfer > Waste

  2. Select the products you want to waste

  3. Click Waste

  4. Choose a waste reason

  5. Enter the quantity

  6. Select the unit of measure (options depend on product setup)

  7. Click Waste

💡 Product Availability: When logging waste, you'll see if a product or recipe is 'available' or 'unavailable'. Only Admins, or Managers with the appropriate permission, can waste unavailable items.

What can you waste?

  • Products: All products in Edify are available to waste by default

  • Recipes/Menu Items: Only recipes with "count in stocktake" enabled appear in the waste list. If you can't find a menu item, check this setting or ask your systems manager to update it.

Backdating waste records

Employee users can only log waste for the current day. If you forgot to record something, ask a Manager or Admin to backdate it for you.

Managers and Admins can create backdated waste records up to 7 days in the past (Managers need the appropriate custom permission):

  1. Follow the usual waste logging steps

  2. Select the date you actually wasted the item

Deleting waste records

You can delete waste records from the Waste tab by clicking the red trash icon next to the entry.

⚠️ Important: You can only delete waste records created after your last closed stocktake. Once you close a stocktake, you cannot delete any records from before that date.

Waste Reporting

The Homepage Report includes two waste reports:

  • Waste Item Level Report - detailed breakdown of individual waste entries

  • Waste Summary Report - aggregated waste data

Both reports are downloadable and filterable by site and date range. Find out more about what data each report contains [here].

Best Practices for Waste Tracking

Track all waste for accurate COGS
For the most accurate COGS reporting and to minimize variances, log all wastage in Edify—even small amounts add up.

Edify doesn't pull waste from other systems
Waste from your POS or other systems won't automatically appear in Edify. You'll need to manually log all waste in the platform.
