Editing Interface Tools

A detailed overview of the EditMentor interface.

The EditMentor editing interface has six main windows:

  1. Media Library - Location where all media live for a lesson.

  2. Display Monitor - Watch clips from the media library or timeline here.

  3. Lesson Pane - The location to review lesson text and challenge information once beginning your challenge.

  4. Tools Palette - Where the editing tools are available such as Ripple Delete, Delete, and Trim Tools.

  5. Timeline - Where the actual editing takes place, combining video, audio, and graphics to construct your video project.

  6. Information Panel - The location to initially read the lesson text, start a lesson, or start a challenge.

Information Panel

The media library is used to hold media, organize it, and make it available for you to review.

  1. Media Library - Clips available in this lesson

  2. Media browser - Imported media previously uploaded into EditMentor (Only available in Educator accounts.)

  3. Search bar - Find clips in the media library by name

  4. Media - The clips imported into the project

Media Library

The Display Monitor plays the footage from the library or timeline.

  1. Clip Name

  2. Monitor

  3. Timecode - Left Timecode is based on Playhead's Position, and Right Timecode is the Overall Clip Duration.

  4. Button Bar - From left to right: Add In Point, Add Out Point, Play, Insert, Overwrite

  5. Full-Screen Mode - Opens the viewer window into a full-screen display.

Display Monitor

Lesson Pane

Shows the text of the lesson or challenge. The Lesson Pane allows users to read lesson information while trying to complete the challenge.

Tools Palette

  1. Select - Use for selecting individual clips or groups of clips

  2. Cut - Adds a cut to all tracks, video, and audio, at the location of the playhead

  3. Single Cut - Adds a cut to a single track, video, or audio, at the location of the mouse

  4. Ripple Delete - Deletes both the selected clip and the empty gap

  5. Delete - Deletes the selected clip and leaves an empty gap

  6. Trim - Three tools: Trim, Ripple Trim, and Roll - Hover Over Button to Reveal

  7. Clear In/Out Points - Clears In and Out Points marked on the timeline

Tools Palette

6. Hover over the Trim Tool icon to find:

  • Basic Trim - Red arrow. Trim clip and leave a gap

  • Ripple Trim - Yellow arrow. Trim clip and close the gap

  • Rolling Trim - Move both the A clip and B clip in equal proportions

Tip: Hover the mouse on any tool to read the icon's name and see its keyboard shortcut, if available.

The timeline contains the clips and actions needed to complete a lesson.

Timeline

Buttons and Functions on the Left Side of the Timeline Panel

  1. Show Hint Button - A clue to answering the challenge question. If clicked, the user's score for the challenge will not be affected.

  2. Reveal Answer Button - The user may reveal correct, incorrect, partially correct, or all answers. If this feature is used, the user will NOT score points for this challenge.

  3. Timecode - Timecode of the timeline

  4. Patch Panel

Buttons and Functions on the Right Side of the Timeline Panel

  1. Submit answers - Press this button after completing a challenge

  2. Button bar - From left to right: undo, redo, save timeline (only available to educator accounts, at this time), undo all, reset the timeline, snapping, zoom slider

Information Panel

A dynamic panel is used throughout EditMentor. The panel changes depending on what page of the site you are on. Use the information panel to:

  • Read lesson text

  • Start a lesson

  • Start a challenge

  • Create lessons and challenges (only available to educator accounts at this time)

  • Create classrooms and courses (only available to educator accounts at this time)
