The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism training is a standardised training designed for all health and social care staff across England. This was introduced in 2022.

It was developed following the tragic death of Oliver McGowan, a young man with autism and a mild learning disability, who died in 2016 after being given medication he did not want or need. Oliver’s case highlighted the urgent need for better understanding of autism and learning disabilities within health and care services.

The training is now part of the government’s commitment to ensure that all health and social care workers have the right skills to provide safe, respectful, and person-centred care to people with a learning disability and autistic people.
