Your responsibilities as a carer

You must:

  • Follow the client’s care plan and moving & handling risk assessment

  • Use the correct equipment and techniques

  • Complete moving & handling training before supporting mobility

  • Refresh your training annually

  • Carry out dynamic risk assessments before every move

  • Stop and report if something is not safe

You must never attempt a move that puts you or the client at risk.

Risk assessments – what to do in practice

Before care starts

edyn.care completes a bespoke moving & handling risk assessment for every client.
This may involve Occupational Therapists or Physiotherapists.

Before every move (dynamic risk assessment)

Always use TILEO:

  • Task – what needs to be done?

  • Individual – the client’s ability today

  • Load – the person or equipment

  • Environment – space, flooring, hazards

  • Other factors – fatigue, time of day, equipment available

If anything has changed, pause and reassess.

Promoting independence and dignity

You should:

  • Encourage clients to do as much as they safely can

  • Use equipment to support independence

  • Respect privacy and dignity at all times

  • Gain consent before assisting

  • Follow Mental Capacity Act guidance if capacity is in question

Moving & handling should always be least restrictive.

When NOT to proceed

You must stop and escalate immediately if:

  • The environment is unsafe

  • Equipment is missing, broken or unsuitable

  • The client’s condition has changed

  • You feel unsafe or unsure

What to do:

  1. Stop the task

  2. Make the client safe

  3. Call the office or on-call team

  4. Record the concern

Never “push through” an unsafe situation.

Equipment safety

  • Only use equipment listed in the care plan

  • Check equipment before use

  • Never use damaged or faulty equipment

  • Report concerns immediately

If equipment belongs to the client/family and is unsafe, do not use it — report it.

Training & competency

All carers must:

  • Complete moving & handling training before supporting mobility

  • Complete annual refreshers

  • Demonstrate competence through:

    • supervision

    • spot checks

    • observation of practice

    • learning from incidents

This is part of edyn.care’s quality and safety monitoring.

Reporting incidents and near misses

You must report:

  • accidents

  • incidents

  • near misses

Even if no one was hurt.

Reporting helps:

  • prevent injuries

  • improve care plans

  • protect you and the client

Use the Event Reporting process in your portal.

Key takeaways

  • Always follow the care plan

  • Always assess before you move

  • Always stop if it’s unsafe

  • Always report concerns

  • Your safety matters as much as the client’s

If you are ever unsure, call the office or on-call team — you will always be supported.
