Why This Matters

When you live in someone’s home, it’s easy for professional lines to blur. Clear boundaries protect:

  • The client

  • You

  • Your career

  • The organisation

Dress & Appearance

You must:

  • Wear clean, modest clothing.

  • Wear flat, closed-toe supportive shoes.

  • Keep nails short.

  • Remove jewellery during personal care.

  • Wear appropriate sleepwear overnight.

What to do if…

🔹 A client says “You’re like family, you can dress how you like.”

Kindly explain:

“I have to follow company guidelines while I’m working.”

Gifts & Money

You must NOT:

  • Accept money.

  • Borrow or lend money.

  • Be given a PIN number.

  • Witness a will.

  • Keep lottery winnings.

  • Use your own loyalty card for shopping.

  • Sell anything to the client.

What to do if…

🔹 A client offers you £50 to say thank you
Politely decline and inform your manager.

🔹 A client insists you keep jewellery
Refuse and report immediately.

🔹 You are asked to help with banking
Only do so if clearly written in the care plan and authorised.

🔹 You are named in a will
Tell your manager immediately.

Financial Recording

If authorised to handle money:

  • Record every transaction.

  • Keep receipts.

  • Use approved forms.

  • Never mix your money with the client’s.

Remember

In live-in care: You are a professional guest in someone’s home.
Boundaries protect trust.
Financial transparency protects everyone.

If unsure — contact your care manager or on-call team immediately.
