What counts as bullying or harassment?
It can include:
Sexual comments or jokes
Racist or discriminatory remarks
Being shouted at repeatedly
Being criticised in a humiliating way
Being denied access to food or facilities
Being pressured to work beyond agreed hours
Threats about “reporting you” unfairly
A family member entering your room without permission
It does not matter if the person says they were “only joking”.
What to do if a client makes sexual comments
Clearly say the behaviour is not appropriate (if safe to do so).
Contact your manager or on-call immediately.
If you feel unsafe, remove yourself from the situation.
If at risk, call emergency services.
You will not lose work for raising this.
What to do if a family member shouts at you
Stay calm.
Do not argue.
Leave the immediate area if needed.
Call your manager.
Record what happened (date/time).
We may review the placement.
What if I feel trapped in the house?
Your safety comes first.
If you feel intimidated or unsafe:
Step outside if possible.
Call the on-call manager.
If you cannot leave safely, call 999.
We will prioritise removing you safely.
What if it’s another carer?
Report it to your manager or HR.
You do not need to confront them yourself.
What if I’m worried about speaking up?
You are protected.
We do not tolerate retaliation.
You can also use the whistleblowing route if preferred.
What happens after I report?
We respond within 2 working days.
We assess immediate risk.
We may review or end the placement.
We may start a safeguarding process.
We will support you throughout.

You are not “just a carer in someone’s house”.
You are a professional delivering regulated care.
You deserve dignity and respect at all times.
