We understand that working in live-in care is demanding. If you’re unwell or something unexpected happens, here’s what to do.

What to do if you wake up unwell during a placement

  1. Call your Line Manager immediately (do not text).

  2. Explain:

    • What’s wrong

    • Whether you need medical help

    • If you can continue safely until cover arrives

  3. Stay with the client unless you are medically unsafe to do so.

  4. Provide a clear handover to the replacement carer.

We will arrange emergency cover and inform the client/family.

What to do if you’re too unwell to start a placement

  • Give as much notice as possible.

  • Do not travel if unfit.

What if you are admitted to hospital?

Ask a family member to notify us as soon as possible.

What happens when you return?

You’ll have a supportive return-to-work conversation. We’ll talk about:

  • Whether you feel ready for live-in duties

  • If you need a shorter placement

  • Whether a phased return would help

  • Any wellbeing support you may need

What if you feel burnt out?

Live-in care can be emotionally intense.

Tell us if you experience:

  • Exhaustion that doesn’t improve with rest

  • Anxiety about returning to placement

  • Sleep disruption

  • Emotional overwhelm

We may:

  • Adjust placement length

  • Offer additional supervision

  • Arrange Occupational Health support

What if your absence is related to a disability or pregnancy?

We will make reasonable adjustments in line with the Equality Act. Please tell your manager so we can support you properly.

What if you’re struggling but not physically unwell?

Speak to us early. Absence isn’t the only solution — we can often adjust placements or provide support before things escalate.

Remember

Your health matters.
Our priority is:

  • Your wellbeing

  • Safe care for clients

  • Fair and supportive processes

If you are unsure about anything, call your Line Manager or the On-Call number.
