Looking After Your Wellbeing in Live-In Care

Being a live-in carer is rewarding — but it can also be demanding. You work long shifts, often alone, inside someone’s home. Your wellbeing matters just as much as the person you support.

Why This Matters

If you are overtired, overwhelmed or stressed:

  • Your health can suffer

  • Boundaries can blur

  • Mistakes can happen

  • Safeguarding risks can increase

We want to prevent problems before they happen.

What Support Is Available?

You have access to:

  • 24/7 on-call support

  • Regular supervision

  • Confidential counselling (EAP)

  • Welfare check-ins

  • Placement reviews if needed

  • Mediation if family dynamics are difficult

You will never be penalised for raising wellbeing concerns.

Live-In Situations That Can Increase Stress

  • Being woken repeatedly overnight

  • Not getting proper breaks

  • Feeling watched or monitored by family

  • No private space

  • Family asking for “extras” outside the care plan

  • Feeling emotionally overwhelmed

  • Isolation from friends/family

If any of these apply, tell us early.

What To Do If…

You Are Exhausted From Night Waking

Contact your coordinator immediately.
We will review the care plan and may:

  • Adjust the package

  • Arrange additional night support

  • Rotate placement

You must not continue working if you are unsafe due to fatigue.

A Family Member Is Making You Uncomfortable

Examples:

  • Speaking to you disrespectfully

  • Entering your private space

  • Constantly criticising

  • Asking you to do non-care tasks

Report this to your manager straight away.
We may:

  • Speak to the family

  • Re-set boundaries

  • Review the placement

You have the right to dignity and respect.

You Feel Emotionally Overwhelmed

Contact your supervisor or on-call line.
You can request:

  • Extra supervision

  • Reflective discussion

  • Counselling support

  • Short break between placements

You Think Stress Is Affecting Your Work

Tell us immediately.

This is not disciplinary. It is about keeping you and your client safe.
We will:

  • Assess risk

  • Adjust duties if needed

  • Provide support

You Feel Unsafe

If immediate danger:

  • Call emergency services if required.

  • Then contact on-call.

You can be removed from a placement if your safety is compromised.

Remember

You are a lone worker — but you are not alone.

Speaking up early prevents bigger problems later.

Your wellbeing protects:

  • You

  • Your client

  • Your professional registration

  • Our CQC standards

If in doubt — contact us.
