Backup and Sync are two different ways of uploading and storing your files on Elkjøp Cloud. Each method has its own benefits. We understand that distinguishing between two data management methods can sometimes be confusing.
In this article, we'll clarify the differences, explain when each approach is relevant, and outline the advantages of both. This article will help you to decide when to use the backup feature, and when to use the sync feature.
Backup
Elkjøp Cloud's desktop application allows for automatic backup of files and folders from your computer to Elkjøp Cloud. Everything you have backed up using the desktop application is accessible on cloud.elkjop.no and in the mobile app, in addition to the desktop application itself.
Backup is acts as a safeguard in case of unexpected events affecting your computer.
How it works: You select folders that you want Elkjøp Cloud to "watch" by adding them to the Elkjøp Cloud desktop application. Changes you make in these folders are mirrored from your computer to Elkjøp Cloud.
When to use Backup:
To safely store files and folders on your computer in Elkjøp Cloud.
To access those files from anywhere in the world using our web app or mobile app.
To back up an external hard drive or a NAS to Elkjøp Cloud.
Important Notes:
Files you add to a backed-up folder are automatically uploaded to Elkjøp Cloud.
Files you modify in a backed-up folder are uploaded to Elkjøp Cloud as new versions.
Deletions on your computer are also reflected in your Elkjøp Cloud backup.
Deleted files are stored in Trash for 30 days and can be restored
Synchronization
Elkjøp Cloud's desktop application creates a unique folder that allows you to synchronize files between all your devices with Elkjøp Cloud installed. This folder is called "Synched" and is available locally on your computer, on cloud.elkjop.no and in the mobile app.
Synchronization ensures that your files are always up-to-date and consistent across all your devices, allowing seamless collaboration and accessibility
How it works: A special folder called the "Synced folder" mirrors content both to and from Elkjøp Cloud. Synchronization is instant and continuous. Folders inside the Synced folder can be shared with friends and colleagues, and any changes made are synchronized instantly across all devices. Locally on your computer, the Synced folder will be placed under Favourites/Quick access and be called "Elkjøp Cloud".
When to use Synchronization:
To keep files and folders synchronized across all your devices.
To access and make changes to files and folders that should be synced back to your other devices.
For collaborative work with friends and colleagues.
Important Notes:
Deleting a file from the Sync folder removes it from Elkjøp Cloud and all synchronized computers.
Shared folder deletions affect all members of a shared file or folder.
Where to Place Your Folders
We recommend placing folders you want to share or often need quick access to on all your devices in the Sync folder.
Data you only want to securely back up should be added to the Backup in the desktop application, as a safeguard in case something happens to your computer.
Additional ways of storing data in Elkjøp Cloud
Elkjøp Cloud's Archive feature offers an additional way to store your data.
How it works: You can use the Archive to store files on Elkjøp Cloud without keeping copies on your computer. It's like a digital safe where you can store files you don't need immediate access to.
When to use Archive:
When you want to keep certain files on Elkjøp Cloud for long-term storage but don't need them cluttering your local storage.
To free up space on your computer while retaining access to important files in the cloud.
The Archive feature provides a convenient storage option for files that you want to keep but don't necessarily need to access regularly. Note that the archive is not updated automatically. If you save a file in both the Archive and on your computer, any changes you make to one of these files won't automatically affect the other.
