See below for a list of helpful terms for the industry and our company:

Terminology/Name/Question/Acronym

What does it mean? What is it? Can you briefly explain it? How is it connected to our company? Possible nonsense?

A

AC Disconnect (hanging)

The primary purpose of these disconnect switches is so that you can shut off the incoming flow of power from your solar panels

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wm75XgbqHBY DC is how the electricity starts, the Inverter converts it to AC

The System Size in our system is DC

Additional products or services added to the solar deal

System Adder is added to the actual physical system which is automatically calculated (i.e. panel type) and a Value Adder is optional

Azimuth

Angular measurement, referring to the orientation of the roof - facing N, S, E or W

B

The base system cost per watt - this includes all items required to install the system

This does not include the value adders

For storing energy generated by panels to use when it's actually needed

Boots on the Roof vs. Drone

Boots on the Roof means someone actually gets on the roof (site surveyor or unique reps) vs. a drone flying above the home to take pictures

C

A centralized department that handles inbound and outbound calls from current and potential customers

CBC

California Building Code - which is designed to "safeguard life or limb, health, property and public welfare by
regulating and controlling the design, construction, quality of
materials, use and occupancy, location and maintenance of all buildings and structures and certain equipment"

Can also rarely refer to Canadian Broadcasting Company

These happen after an agreement is signed because the system the rep created does not allow for the solar system to be installed

Example: Main Panel Upgrade (Site Survey found the existing main electrical panel could not cope with extra load, so additional equipment is needed)

A sales rep

D

Deal Type

Typically referred to in surveys, could be solar, site survey, install survey, SOLO, etc.

Deal vs. Sales Order

The deal is what the Sales Rep/Closer sells to the customer. The Sales Order is once the Sales Agreement for the Deal has been signed, it is on the Installer side, where they order the equipment and start the install process

Surcharge lenders add on top of the total system cost to render their services - TotalSystemCost / (1 - dealerfees)

Dealer Program

Declination

Steepness of the roof

Current state of mind of a homeowner described by Sales Rep or Setter usually described in CRM. Examples include "Ready to move to Proposal", "Hot", "Has more questions"

Walking door-to-door as a sales rep or setter

E

Licensed Professional Electrical Engineer's approval of electrical portion of solar system

Electrical Engineering report

EPC stands for Engineering, Procurement, Construction and is a prominent form of contracting agreement in the construction industry. In solar industry EPC term is used for providing end-to-end solar services from designing the system, procuring the components and installing the project. So this is the Installer. Company responsible for physically installing the system.

Installation is usually free or low cost, homeowner pays a fixed monthly lease payment and does not receive any tax credits or other financial incentives

Load Controller

When battery is fully charged, diverts energy away from battery

M

Main Service Panel (MSP)

Home's main electrical panel

Electric Panel Upgrade to handle the amps required for solar. Most homes are on a 150 amp service and solar requires a 200 amp service.

This requires a permit and a work order from the power company

M1

Project status of CRM (some clients use this, some don't), this is the initial stage after agreement signed

N

NEM

Net Energy Metering

If the utility account holder is different from the primary signer, please add their name and details under NEM signer

The homeowner agrees to purchase ALL of the Power generated whether they use it or not at a set per Kwh price, term is generally 20-years

PTI

Permission to Install

Stands for "Permission to Operate". Usually a milestone indicating that the utility has given the all clear to operate

Purchase

The homeowner is buying the solar system being installed on their property; they can pay cash or finance with a loan

Photovoltaic = Solar System (this really means the module/panel)

R

Racking

Mounting type for panels

Redline

The overhead costs plus the profit margin

This is usually expressed in PPW (ex. redline of $2.80/watt)

Think "in the red" in accounting: anything below the red line means you are losing money and the solar system

S

Sales Reps and sales companies that sell solar

Closes the deals that are set by the setter

Goes over options and proposals with the customer

Schedules appointments once Setter has had initial contact with customer

Service Agreement

Chat

Shade Report

A report of obstructions to solar panels; i.e trees

A review and inspection of the home to ensure a solar system can be installed

This is a required 2nd touch where measurements are taken

The surveyor has to get on the roof unless they use a drone

They have to go into the attic and check the Main Panel and determine if an MPU is required

If a re-roof is required, customer has to be home for this site survey to happen

The person completing the site survey, climbs on the roof, climbs into attic, could be a tradesman i.e electrician

T

TPO

Utility Tariff

A tariff is a pricing schedule or rate plan that utilities offer to customers

Along with the pricing plan, there may be certain rules for each tariff a utility offers, such as the times or seasons when prices will vary, eligibility for a tariff, when/how a customer can join or leave the tariff, what type of meter must be installed and more

Other things that can be found in a utility's tariff book include sample forms that customers may be required to fill out, rules for applications for service, bill adjustment, low-income programs and service area maps
