Grab your Apple Watch, your ActiveLook Eyewear, and you are good to go !

Updated over 2 months ago

Note:

  • Using Strava Live Segment requires a Strava subscription.

  • Strava Live Segments with ActiveLook can only be used on the Apple Watch ActiveLook app at this time.

Connecting Strava to ActiveLook

Note: refer to this article to first setup your ActiveLook eyewear with your Apple watch.

  • Open the ActiveLook mobile application on your iPhone.

  • Select Setting pane (bottom right corner) > Connexion Center > Connected Apps / Strava > Connect with Strava.

  • You will be prompted to log into your Strava account or create an account if you do not have one.

  • Accept that the ActiveLook app can connect to your Strava account.

  • After connecting successfully, your ActiveLook activities (recorded from the mobile or Apple watch application) will be automatically uploaded to your Strava account.

  • You can even sync past activities over from Activelook that were recorded before connecting with Strava.

Confirm your Apple Watch also connects to Strava

  • Open the ActiveLook application on your Apple Watch

  • Open the settings (...) menu for running or cycling activity.

  • Check the last item of “Strava Live Segment” section:

    • If 'Load...' is displayed, then your Apple watch has not connected to Strava yet. Open your ActiveLook mobile app to double check the Strava connection is active (see above). If required, you may kill / relaunch the watch app so that the Strava connection is restored.

    • If 'Browse' is displayed, then your Apple watch is properly connected to your Strava account.

      • Select 'Browse' then 'Reload' to initiate a first synchronisation of your Strava Segments. (..which takes a bit of time)

Building and browsing your list of active segments

You can build and fetch on your Apple watch a list of Strava segments. For these segments the live segment and real-time progress comparison will automatically trigger when going over the segment.

To select your live segments:

  • On your Strava account, use the Strava Segment Explorer or star segments from activities to build your list of starred segments. You can even star segments directly on the watch by viewing “around me”.

Note: only segments with a positive slope will be available for Strava Live Segments. Your segments having a negative slope (even -0,1%) will not be transferred on your watch nor be available during your effort.

  • Ensure your Activelook mobile application is paired to your Strava account (see above)

  • Ensure you have a Strava subscription.

  • Open the ActiveLook application on your Apple Watch.

  • For your selected sport (running or cycling) press the settings menu (...).

  • In the “Strava Live Segment” section you may:

    • Enable/disable your starred segment by switching corresponding toggle.

    • Enable/disable segments around you by switching corresponding toggle. The list of segments “around me” is a combination of the most popular segments in areas of 2 to 20 km around you.

    • Select “Browse” to view your list of segments.

Note : After the initial connection, a few minutes may be required for the segments to be synced to your watch. Ensure your watch has a stable internet connection to reach Strava services. Ensure that at least one of the ‘starred’ or ‘around me’ toggles is enabled in order to view some segments. The segments displayed are based on and segments will eventually get sorted by distance to your current location, closest first.

  • Click on a segment card to see the details for this segment and the corresponding reference times to beat.

  • You can star segments from the list of segments ‘around me’ to ensure you can retrieve them easily in future. Simply click on the empty star for this segment.

  • You can ‘unstar’ a segment from your list of starred segments. Click on the orange star for this segment.

  • You can individually de-activate or re-activate a given segment. It will still be available in the list of segments but no race will get triggered during your activity.

  • You can fully turn off Live Segment by turning off both ‘Starred’ and ‘Around me’ toggles.

Selecting your opponent(s)

Choose the opponent(s) you want to race against during your live segment efforts. During the segment effort, a dedicated ‘racing screen’ will be created for each of the selected opponents.

  • Open the ActiveLook application on your Apple Watch.

  • For your selected sport (running or cycling) press the settings menu (...).

  • In the “Strava Live Segment” section select ‘race against’

  • Enable/disable toggles for the various available opponents :

    • Your PR: Your personal record for the segment.

    • The KOM/QOM: The king (or Queen) of the mountain: Record holder for the segment.

    • The Carrot: The racer just ahead of you on the leaderboard who is part of the list of athletes you are following on Strava.

    • The Wolf: The racer just behind you on the leaderboard who is part of the list of athletes you are following on Strava.

Approaching an active segment

  • When an active segment is detected in your proximity you will get notified by an ‘Approaching screen’.

  • This screen will be displayed on your watch & eyewear with key segment info and an indication of the remaining distance to the segment start flag.

Note : This approaching screen triggers whatever the direction from which you are approaching the segment start flag. Live Segment race itself will only trigger if you cross the segment start line in the proper direction. If you do not cross the segment start line and go more than 150m away from the segment start flag then the segment will get automatically discarded and screens will switch back to your previously displayed data screens.

Cancellation of a segment race

  • During the approaching phase, click the ‘Ignore’ button on your watch to cancel the race for this segment.

  • At any time you may also choose to swipe back to another data screen and leave the live segment actively going in the background.

Racing phase

The Live Segment race will trigger when you cross the segment start line.

During the race, a racing screen will be created for each of your selected opponents (the KOM, your PR, the Wolf, Carrot.. see ‘selecting your opponents’ above).

A racing screen displays the time ahead/behind versus the corresponding opponent, your current heart rate as well as the remaining distance to the end of the segment.

-Live Segment racing screen-

You can swipe through the various racing screens to monitor your performance against each of the available opponents

Segment start detection: note that in order to properly trigger a segment start, ActiveLook requires that you are successively detected prior and then after the start line of the segment. In case of a sharp turn into the start, do ensure that you make a wide enough loop behind the (virtual) segment start flag to be detected prior to the start line by the GPS of your watch. You may check on Strava the exact segment shape in its starting zone.

Successfull segment start detection:

Failing segment start detection:

Multiple segments: The application supports overlapping segments. If you are racing on a given segment, and approaching another segment start flag, it will be detected and eventually start in parallel to the first one. You will be notified by a watch vibration. New racing screens will be added in background in order not to disturb your ongoing segment. You can swipe to new segment screens using watch touch screen or eyewear gesture sensor (if enabled)

Missing opponents: Racing screens are created for all opponents both being enabled in the 'race against' menu, and having an effort recorded. As a consequence, if you have disabled the KOM as an opponent, and if you do not have any PR, Wolf or Carrot effort recorded for a given segment, then no race will trigger for that segment.

Away from Segment: The segment tracking of ActiveLook application is quite permissive and will always try to estimate your position & time on the segment even if away from the route for some time. This covers for any loss of accuracy on your GPS as well as for “low quality segments” that can sometimes be quite far from the actual road. If your current position is detected too far away from the segment a “?” icon will be visible and your relative time will not be displayed. You have 90 seconds to be back on the track before the Live Segment race gets canceled.

Completing a segment

At the end of the segment, your segment elapsed time will be displayed both in eyewear and watch. A notification appears if one of your selected opponents is beaten.

A segment summary screen on your watch provides preliminary results for your segment and your delta time with each of selected opponents.

Timing accuracy: The application provides an estimate of your live position during the segment progress. It also provides an estimate of your finish time at the end of the segment. However the only reference for your segment time for Strava leaderboard will eventually be calculated and provided by Strava once your activity is uploaded on your account. Our estimations are finely carved but a delta of up to a few seconds may be observed.
