Entertainment-Only: World Cup Bracket — How Does the Leaderboard Work?

How the World Cup Bracket leaderboard works, what's new for 2026 with the addition of the Round of 32 column, and how Possible Points and the tiebreaker are displayed.

Overview

The World Cup Bracket leaderboard has been updated for 2026 to reflect the expanded tournament format. Here's a breakdown of what's on the leaderboard and what's new.

Leaderboard Structure

The leaderboard is divided into two sections if the Group Stage is included:

  • Group Stage — Shows each member's points earned from correct group ranking predictions.

  • Knockout Stage — Shows each member's correct picks broken down by round, under the "Wins by Round" sub-header.

If the Group Stage is toggled off, the Group Stage columns remain hidden and only the Knockout Stage columns are shown.

What's New for 2026 — Round of 32 Column

The Knockout Stage "Wins by Round" section now shows 5 columns (previously 4), reflecting the addition of the new Round of 32:

  • Round of 32 (new)

  • Round of 16

  • Quarterfinals

  • Semifinals

  • Final

Possible Points calculations have also been updated to account for all 5 knockout rounds using the new default point values.

What Is "Possible Points"?

Possible Points shows the maximum score a member could still achieve if they picked every remaining game correctly. It updates in real time as games are played and teams are eliminated. It's a useful indicator of who still has a mathematical chance of winning the contest.

Tiebreaker on the Leaderboard

If two or more members are tied on total points at the end of the contest, the tiebreaker — the member whose goal total prediction was closest to the actual number of goals scored across all 31 knockout stage games — is used to determine the final ranking.
