Understanding Framework Structure
Frameworks contain controls organized hierarchically.
A typical structure looks like this:
Framework (e.g., SOC 2)
Category 1:
• Control 1.1
• Control 1.2
• Subcategory 1.1
• Control 1.1.1
• Control 1.1.2
Category 2:
• …
This hierarchy helps organize hundreds of controls into manageable sections.
Editing Controls
Within a framework, you can:
• Edit control descriptions
• Add or modify testing procedures
• Reorganize the hierarchy
• Add labels for categorization
Using Frameworks in Assessments vs. Programs
Frameworks support both assessment and ongoing compliance workflows:
• Assessments—Evaluate compliance at a specific point in time
• Programs—Set up recurring tasks to continuously monitor compliance
One framework can be used for multiple assessments and programs.
