As you're completing your specification documents, if you need to add extra questions or fields, you'll be asked to specify what the Field Type should be.

Simply put, the field type allows you to dictate how the data will be displayed to the person filling in the form, or how they should enter the data.

There are 11 field types to select from.

Title

This is a Heading field and is used to display information only.

Text

This is a text field and is used to display information only. Typically used for body text or paragraphs.

Short Text

This is an alphanumeric text input field.

Your Candidates will be able to input information in to this type of field using any of the keys on their keyboard, including Special Characters up to a limit of 50 characters (including spaces).

If you're asking the respondent to provide a date, use the Date question type.

Long Text

This is an alphanumeric text input field and is designed to capture large paragraphs of text.

Multiple Choice

Multiple choice questions allow you to select your answer from a list of options.

Rather than displaying as a drop down list, the options display as a series of tick-boxes.

Drop Down

Similar to multiple choice questions, drop down lists allow the respondent to select an answer from a list.

Unlike Multiple Choice questions, only a single answer can be selected from a drop down list.

File Upload

This type of question allows the respondent to upload a file.

This type of question can be useful if you'd like your candidates to upload a portfolio or a covering letter.

Numeric

This is a simple number field, which you can use when you want the respondent to provide a whole number.

If you're asking the respondent to provide a date, use the Date question type.

Decimal

Similar to the Numeric field, this allows the respondent to enter a number.

The difference with this field type is that they can input a decimal number, up to 2 decimal places.

Boolean (Y/N)

If your question requires a simple YES or NO answer, use this question type.

A good example of this question, seen in many systems, would be 'Do you have the right to work in the UK?'

Date

Use this field if you want the respondent to enter a date.

The person filling in the form can type in the date manually, or they can use a date picker to select the date from a calendar view.
