Canadian National HOS Rule Types

The following 4 Rule types must be offer to comply with MVTA regulations.

Property Carrying Vehicles - South of Latitude 60°N / 70 Hour Rule

  • Off Duty - OFF: 10 hours total of OFF. A motor carrier shall ensure that a driver takes and the driver shall take at least 10 hours of off-duty time in a day.

  • Off Duty - OFF: 8 hours of consecutive OFF. 8 consecutive hours of off-duty time before driving D or being ON again.

  • Off Duty - OFF: 16 hours between 8 hour OFF events. The 8 hour off periods must be separated by 16 hours in order to be considered valid.

  • Off Duty - OFF: Drivers may defer a maximum of 2 hours of the daily off-duty time to the following day ifthe off-duty time deferred is not part of the mandatory 8 consecutive hours of off-duty time;the total off-duty time taken in the 2 days is at least 20 hours;the off-duty time deferred is added to the 8 consecutive hours of off-duty time taken in the second day;the total driving time in the 2 days does not exceed 26 hours; andthere is a declaration in the “Remarks” section of the daily log that states that the driver is deferring off-duty time under this section and that clearly indicates whether the driver is driving under day one or day two of that time.

  • Off Duty - OFF: 5+ Hour Ferry exception. Ferry crossing that takes more than 5 hours is not required to take the mandatory 8 consecutive hours of off-duty time. Must be marked as SB time

  • Break - B (OFF): Off-duty time other than the mandatory 8 consecutive hours may be distributed throughout the day in blocks of no less than 30 minutes each.

  • Drive - D: 13-Hour Limit. May drive a maximum of 13 hours in a day

  • On Duty - ON: 14-Hour Limit, no driver shall drive after the driver has accumulated 14 hours of on-duty time in a day.

  • On Duty - OFF: 70 Hour Limit. Drivers must stop driving after accumulating 70 hour of ON Duty time within a period of 7 days. A driver may restart a 7 consecutive day period after taking 36 or more consecutive hours off duty.

  • Off Duty - OFF: 10 hours total of OFF. A motor carrier shall ensure that a driver takes and the driver shall take at least 10 hours of off-duty time in a day.

  • Off Duty - OFF: 8 hours of consecutive OFF. 8 consecutive hours of off-duty time before driving D or being ON again.

  • Off Duty - OFF: 16 hours between 8 hour OFF events. The 8 hour off periods must be separated by 16 hours in order to be considered valid.

During this period a Driver must take at least 24 consecutive hours OFF before accumulating 70 hours of ON in a 7 Day cycle.

  • Off Duty - OFF: 10 hours total of OFF. A motor carrier shall ensure that a driver takes and the driver shall take at least 10 hours of off-duty time in a day.

  • Off Duty - OFF: 8 hours of consecutive OFF. 8 consecutive hours of off-duty time before driving D or being ON again.

  • Off Duty - OFF: 20 hours between 8 hour OFF events. The 8 hour off periods must be separated by 20 hours in order to be considered valid.
