Understanding Parent and Sub Risk Relationships

  • The current risk being viewed is the Parent Risk

  • Risks shown in the Sub Risk section are Child Risks

  • A Parent Risk can have many Sub Risks

  • A Sub Risk can have only one Parent Risk

  • There is no limit to how many levels can be created, but 2–3 levels is usually sufficient

Parent-Child relationships help structure large risk programs without duplicating records.

Attaching Sub Risks

  1. Go to the Sub Risk section in the Risk Details screen

  2. Click the blue plus (+) icon in the top-right corner

  3. Search for and select an existing risk to attach as a Sub Risk

    • Risks must already exist in the system

    • New risks can be created in the Enterprise Risk Console

If Portfolios are enabled:

  • Admin Users can attach any risk

  • Standard Users can only attach risks from portfolios they have access to

What Happens When You Attach Sub Risks

  • Sub Risks are displayed in a summary list showing:

    • Risk name

    • Portfolio (if enabled)

    • Inherent Risk (if enabled)

    • Target Risk (if enabled)

  • Sub Risks contribute to weighted average calculations in the Risk Scoring section

Removing a Sub Risk

  • Click the red “X” on the right side of any listed Sub Risk

  • This removes the relationship only

  • The Sub Risk itself is not deleted from the system

Weighting Sub Risks

  • Use the dropdown next to each Sub Risk to apply a weighting

  • These weights are used in the summary score calculation at the top of the Risk Details screen

Key Notes

  • Sub Risks and Parent Risks have no structural differences

  • All risks appear in the Enterprise Risk Console unless filtered out

  • Filters can be used to:

    • Show only Top-Level Risks

    • Show only Parent Risks

    • Exclude Child Risks

Applies to: Admin Users, Standard Users

Keywords: sub risk, child risk, parent risk, link risk, attach risk, weighted risk, enterprise risk hierarchy, filter risks
