If this feature is enabled for your organization, this section of the Risk Details screen can be used to create, manage, and view relationships between Risks, connected in a Parent-Child relationship.

The Risk being viewed in the current Risk Details screen is considered the Parent Risk. Any Risks shows in the Sub Risk section are considered Child Risks. A Parent Risk can have any number of Child Risks. A Child Risk can have only one Parent Risk. In this way, the Parent-Child relationship is a one-to-many relationship. There is no limit to the number of levels of Parent risks. For example, a Risk may be both a Parent Risk and a Sub Risk, if it has Sub Risks attached to it and it in turn is a Child Risk of another Parent. In practice, it is typically not advisable to go beyond 2 or 3 levels of Risks, as the utility received may not make up for the added complexity of creating and maintaining Parent-Child links.

In the example below, the Sub Risk section shows a summary of the three Sub Risks attached to a single risk. If the Portfolio feature is enabled, then the Portfolio of each Risk will be displayed as well. If the Target Risk feature is enabled, a third column will appear with Target Risk scores (not shown). Inherent Risk is shown in this example, but if Inherent Risk were deactivated by the administrator, the column would be removed from this section.

Risks can be attached as Sub Risks by clicking on the blue plus sign icon in the top right corner of the section.

Risks must already exist in the system to be attached. New Risks are created in the Enterprise Risk Console, as described in this article.

If the organization is using the Portfolio feature as described in this article, then Standard Users will only be able to see and attach Risks from Portfolios that they have access to. Admin Users can view and attach all Risks.

Risks can be removed as Sub Risks by clicking on the red X on the right end of each row. Removing a Risk from a Parent-Child relationship does not delete it from the system. All that is deleted is the relationship / link with the Parent Risk.

Note that there is no difference in structure or format for Parent Risks and Child Risks. Both will be displayed in the Enterprise Risk Console, unless the filters are used to exclude them, as discussed in this article.

Finally, Users can select a weighting for each Sub Risk using the drop down provided. The weighting will be used in the weighted average calculation that determines the summary information displayed in the Risk Scoring Section, as described in this article.

* While the two views shown are most common, there are other features available in Essential ERM, and more options may appear in the Risk Scoring Section. The example below shows every possible option displayed.
