How the Problem Appears
Cause
This error indicates that the PDF is corrupted, password-protected, or encrypted and isn't readable by Eve. This can happen even if the PDF is viewable by a local PDF reader like Adobe Acrobat or Preview.
Why Some PDF Viewers Can Load Corrupted Files
Why Some PDF Viewers Can Load Corrupted Files
Not all PDF viewers handle files in the same way. Some viewers have built-in error correction or more robust parsing capabilities that allow them to open and display corrupted files, at least partially. Here's why this happens:
Error Correction: Some PDF viewers, like Adobe Acrobat Reader, have advanced error correction features that can bypass minor corruptions or repair certain errors on the fly.
Flexible Parsing: Different PDF viewers may have different levels of tolerance for formatting errors or missing elements. Less strict viewers might ignore these issues and display whatever content they can read.
Partial Content Display: Some viewers are designed to display whatever parts of the document they can read, even if other parts are corrupted or missing.
Solution
Try each of these solutions to fix the PDF, and re-upload it to Eve to see if the error is fixed:
Repair Using Adobe Acrobat, Preview, or another PDF Editor:
Open the corrupted PDF in Adobe Acrobat (not Reader).
Go to
File > Save As
and save the file with a new name. This can sometimes repair minor corruptions.
Remove Password or Encryption:
If the PDF is password-protected or encrypted, remove the password or encryption using Adobe Acrobat or a similar tool.
Convert the PDF:
Try converting the PDF to another format (such as Word) and then back to PDF. Tools like Adobe Acrobat or online converters can help with this.
Try using the "Print" feature in some PDF Readers to Print a file to a new PDF
Extract and Rebuild:
Try extracting just the pages that you need and rebuild the PDF.
Fix the corruption in the initial tool you used to create the PDF:
Some tools, like redaction software, can output corrupted PDFs. This can happen because the program is faulty or it is misconfigured. Contact that tool's vendor to report the issue and get mitigations.
