How to Easily Categorize Products in Bulk in Shopify

Categorizing products in Shopify can streamline your store's navigation, improving customer experience and potentially boosting your sales. If you're looking to categorize a large number of products efficiently, using Shopify's bulk editing feature can be a game-changer. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to categorize products in bulk by utilizing tags and collections.

Step 1: Export Your Product List

  1. Navigate to Products: Log into your Shopify admin panel and go to the 'Products' section.

  2. Export Products: In the Products page, click on the 'Export' button. You’ll be prompted to select the products you want to export (all products, current page, or selected products). Choose the format for your export file, typically a CSV file, which is most suitable for bulk edits.

Step 2: Edit Your CSV File

  1. Download the CSV File: Once you export the file, download it to your computer.

  2. Add Tags: Open the CSV file using a spreadsheet program (like Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets). You will add tags to your products in the 'Tags' column of the CSV. Ensure these tags correspond to the collections you plan to create. For example, if you want to categorize some products under 'Indoor Plants,' you would add the tag 'indoor plants' to them in the CSV.

Step 3: Re-import the CSV File to Shopify

  1. Save Your CSV File: After adding the necessary tags, save your CSV file.

  2. Import Products: Go back to the Shopify admin panel, navigate to 'Products,' and select 'Import.' Choose your saved CSV file and upload it back to Shopify. This update will apply the tags to all the corresponding products in your store.

Step 4: Create Collections

  1. Navigate to Collections: In the Shopify admin, go to 'Products' and then 'Collections.'

  2. Create a New Collection: Click on 'Create collection.' Give your collection a name that matches one of the tags you used, e.g., 'Indoor Plants.'

  3. Set Collection Conditions: Set the collection to automatically include products based on conditions. Select 'Product tag' is equal to and then enter the tag name ('indoor plants'). This condition will automatically categorize all products with the 'indoor plants' tag into the 'Indoor Plants' collection.

Example:

If you tag a product with 'indoor plants' and create a collection named 'Indoor Plants' with the condition that the product tag includes 'indoor plants,' Shopify will automatically add all tagged products to this collection.

Step 5: Review and Organize

After completing these steps, it’s essential to review your collections to ensure that all products are correctly categorized. You might also want to organize the collections into broader categories or menus to further enhance navigation and the shopping experience on your store.

By following these steps, you can categorize large quantities of products quickly and efficiently in Shopify, making your store easier to manage and navigate for both you and your customers. This method not only saves time but also allows for greater flexibility in managing product assortments and seasonal offerings.
