Within the Inline Text item type, authors can choose from 4 options for student responses.

Studio's authoring platform offers over 20 item types authors can select to create assessment items. Within the Inline Text item type, authors can choose from 4 options for student responses. In this article we discuss the options and use cases for each.

Select the Inline Choice/Entry item type

From the item type selection modal, chose Inline Text. After authoring the Question/Prompt, you will have four options for how students can respond within each Gap Response you include in your item.

1. Inline Choice: This option allows students to select an answer from a dropdown list within a sentence or phrase. Use it to assess comprehension, vocabulary, or grammatical knowledge where multiple-choice options are embedded directly in the text.

2. Text Entry: Students type their answer in a blank field, usually a word or short phrase. This option is ideal for fill-in-the-blank questions or brief responses where specific wording or phrasing is expected.

Scoring: spaces, alphanumeric characters, special characters, and case will not affect scoring

3a. Math Entry (Elementary): Students input basic mathematical expressions using a simplified interface tailored for younger students. Ideal for elementary-level assessments requiring operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division.

Scoring:

  • leading zeroes will not affect scoring

  • trailing zeroes after the decimal point will not affect scoring

  • multiple versions of correct answers can be allowed by author

3b. Math Entry (Secondary): This option enables students to enter complex mathematical expressions suitable for secondary-level topics, including algebra and calculus. Use for higher-level math problems where symbolic entry and precise formatting are required.

4. Numeric Entry: Students provide a numeric answer, which could be an integer or decimal. Best used for questions requiring exact numerical answers, such as measurement or calculation-based problems.

Item type language is sometimes altered for the teacher/instructor/user view for simplicity and clarity. Teacher/instructor/user facing language is included in these descriptions.
