The Fraction Model (Construct) item type asks students to build a visual representation of a fraction by specifying the total number of parts and the number of shaded parts. The platform then renders a corresponding fraction model (a rectangular grid) based on the student's input.
Authoring
When creating a Fraction Model (Construct) item, you'll define:
Expected total parts: The correct total number of equal parts in the model.
Expected shaded parts: The correct number of parts that should be shaded.
Student responses are evaluated by comparing both values (total parts and shaded parts) to the correct answer. The visual layout (e.g., rows and columns) is automatically generated based on the input, not pre-configured by the author.
Student Experience
Students respond by entering:
Total number of parts (e.g., 8 parts in the whole)
Number of shaded parts (e.g., 3 parts shaded)
Once submitted, the platform generates a visual model with the correct number of cells and shaded sections to reflect the fraction they've constructed.
Note: This item type is ideal for assessing conceptual understanding of part-whole relationships and fraction construction, rather than simple recognition or selection.
