We’ve added new capabilities to help you better understand your commercial building stock and tailor your analysis to your goals. Here’s what’s new:
New X-Axis Options for Commercial Building Charts
You can now group your commercial buildings by key characteristics in chart views. Choose from:
None – View all selected buildings as a single group.
Building Size (ft²) – See how your buildings are distributed across fixed size bins.
Building Type – Group by use type (e.g., Retail, Office, Apartment) using DOE building prototype categories.
Building Vintage – View buildings by decade of construction.
These options help you understand the composition of your building stock and identify where specific types of buildings are most prevalent.
Choose Your Y-Axis: Count of Buildings or Floor Area
You now have two ways to define what’s being measured in each chart:
Buildings – Shows the number of buildings in each group.
Floor Area – Shows total square footage across buildings in each group.
This flexibility helps you focus on what matters most—whether that’s the number of properties affected or the scale of space involved.
Exclude Buildings Over 50,000 ft²
To support local analysis that complements (rather than overlaps with) California’s commercial benchmarking policy, you can now exclude buildings over 50,000 square feet from your selection and analysis. This is especially helpful for jurisdictions focusing on small and midsize commercial buildings not already covered by state requirements.
Try It Out
These features are now available in the existing commercial building page. Explore different ways to segment your building data, focus on priority groups, and prepare analysis that aligns with both local goals and state policy frameworks.
