The GLN requirement is a significant change for pharmacies but is an important one. The GLN will help to improve the security of the prescription drug supply chain and protect patients from counterfeit and recalled drugs.
The Global Location Number (GLN) is a unique 13-digit identifier assigned by GS1 that is used to identify locations in the supply chain. The DSCSA, or Drug Supply Chain Security Act, requires that all locations that receive or dispense prescription drugs covered by the law have a GLN. This includes independent pharmacies.
The GLN is used to track the movement of prescription drugs through the supply chain. This information can be used to identify and trace recalled drugs, as well as to prevent counterfeit drugs from entering the supply chain.
Independent pharmacies will be impacted by the GLN requirement in a few ways. First, they will need to obtain a GLN for each location that receives or dispenses prescription drugs covered by the DSCSA. Second, they will need to share their GLNs with their trading partners, such as wholesalers and manufacturers. Third, they will need to use the GLN to track the movement of prescription drugs through their supply chain.
How can independent pharmacies obtain a GLN number?
There are a few different ways to obtain a GLN number.
GS1: One way is to buy one from GS1, the organization that assigns GLN numbers. There is a $30 fee for the number, and you can get one here.
Primary: Your Primary supplier will supply you with one. This, however, might take time, and you won't be able to transact until you have one.
Third-Party Provider: Another way is to contact a third-party provider that can help you obtain a GLN number. If you use any EDI or DSCSA Software, they should be able to get one for you too.
EzriRx will be updating its application process to include the GLN number once the deadline approaches.
