Parents ๐Ÿงธ: Getting Started with In-app Payments

Your nursery has set up in-app payments in Famly to make paying your child's fees as easy as possible. Instead of bank transfers or cash, you can view your invoices and pay directly in the app - all in one place.


How In-app Payments Work

Your nursery decides which payment methods are available to you. Depending on their setup, you may be able to pay by:

  • Debit or credit card - pay instantly

  • BACS Direct Debit - payments are collected directly from your bank account (UK)

  • SEPA Direct Debit - for nurseries based in Ireland

  • Tax-Free Childcare - pay using your government TFC account (see our separate guide: Paying with Tax-Free Childcare)

You'll only see the options your nursery has enabled.

โ„น๏ธ Your payment details are secure. All transactions are processed by Stripe, a trusted payment provider. Neither Famly nor your nursery has direct access to your card or bank account information. If you're paying with Tax-Free Childcare (TFC), payments are processed through a direct integration with HMRC's TFC system


Adding a Payment Method

There are three places you can add a payment method:

From an outstanding balance:

  1. Tap on the Home icon in your sidebar

  2. Select Balance

  3. Tap Pay now on the outstanding payment

  4. Follow the prompts to add a payment method and complete the payment

From the automatic payments section:

  1. Tap on the Home icon in your sidebar

  2. Select Balance

  3. Scroll to the Automatic payments section

  4. Tap Add payment method

  5. Follow the prompts to add a payment method

From your Account settings:

  1. Tap on your profile picture or click Account in the menu bar

  2. Select Settings

  3. Tap Payment methods

  4. Tap Add payment method

  5. Follow the prompts to add a payment method

๐Ÿ’ก There will be no option to add payment methods if your child's nursery has chosen not to use in-app payments


Add a Payment Card

To pay by debit or credit card:

  1. Tap Add payment method

  2. Select Card

  3. Enter your card details

  4. Tap Save

Your card is ready to use straight away โ€” no waiting around.

๐Ÿ’ก If you're using Famly in a browser (not the mobile app), you can also use Apple Pay or Google Pay to enter your card details quickly.


Add a BACS Direct Debit

Direct Debit lets your nursery collect payments directly from your bank account.

  1. Tap Add payment method

  2. Select Add direct debit mandate

  3. Enter your bank details in the window that opens

  4. Read the confirmation message and tick the box

  5. Tap Confirm

Once your Direct Debit is set up, it's ready to use - but payments won't be taken automatically unless you enable automatic payments. You can set this up by following our guide: How to set up automatic payments.

๐Ÿ’ก Your bank needs to verify your Direct Debit mandate before a payment completes. This usually takes around 3 business days. You can make payments straight away, but they will take a bit longer to complete


Add a SEPA Direct Debit (Ireland)

If your nursery is based in Ireland, you may see the option to set up SEPA Direct Debit. The process works the same way as BACS โ€” just select SEPA Direct Debit when adding a payment method.

SEPA mandate verification also takes around 3 business days.


Managing Your Payment Methods

You can update or remove your payment methods from your account settings at any time.

Where to Find Your Payment Methods

  1. Tap on your profile picture or click Account in the menu bar

  2. Select Settings

  3. Tap Payment methods

Here you'll see all your saved payment methods.

Remove a Payment Method

To remove a payment method you no longer use

  1. Go to Settings โ†’ Payment methods

  2. Tap the trash icon next to the payment method you'd like to remove

๐Ÿ’ก If you have automatic payments set up with this payment method, deactivating it will also stop your automatic payments. You can set up a new payment method and re-enable autopay afterwards. Read more about Automatic Payments here


If Your Nursery Requires a Payment Method

Some nurseries ask parents to add a payment method before they can access Famly. If this applies to you, you'll see a message when you log in explaining what's needed.

Simply follow the steps above to add a payment method, and you'll be able to use Famly straight away.

Your nursery may also require you to set up automatic payments as part of this process. If so, adding a payment method will automatically enrol you in autopay - your balance will be charged on the nursery's scheduled payment day. You'll always receive a notification 1 day before you're charged.
