We'd like to keep you informed about important changes related to the 3G network and how it might affect your Farmbot Monitors.
The Timeline
Telstra is switching off 3G from 30 June 2024.
Why is this change happening?
The 3G technology, introduced in 2001, has served us for over two decades. To keep pace with technological advancements and offer you newer services, Telstra will phase out 3G in favour of the newer 4G and other networks. Please note that this transition will affect only those using 3G exclusively. Farmbot Monitors connected via 4G or satellite won't be impacted and will operate as usual.
How does this affect my Farmbot Monitors?
While satellite Farmbot Monitors will be unaffected by this change, some Farmbot Cellular Monitors may experience changes due to variations in 4G coverage compared to the existing 3G.
If you have a cellular Farmbot Monitor, it will either transition to 4G if available or cease operation if still on 3G.

How can I determine the impact on my monitors?
To assess the potential impact:
Stand near your Farmbot Monitor.
Check your mobile phone for a 3G or 4G signal indication next to the battery symbol.
If you see a 3G signal: Contact us for guidance on upgrades. Remember, while your area might be 3G now, 4G rollout is ongoing, so it might soon change.
If you see a 4G signal: Rest assured, your Farmbot Monitor is compatible and will continue to function without any issues.
There is only 3G available at my Farmbot Monitor, what do I do?
If you have determined only the 3G network is available near your monitor, please contact our Customer Service team to discuss options on 02 9901 4798 or service@farmbot.com.au.
What new technology is Farmbot exploring?
We're soon launching a new cellular communications option, NB-IoT. This technology is crafted specifically for IoT devices like our monitors. It promises a broader coverage than both 3G and 4G combined. 5G will not be used as it is not compatible with long cellular range.
What if I don't take any action by 30th June 2024?
Monitors in 4G areas will automatically switch to 4G as it becomes available and function seamlessly.
Monitors in 3G-only areas risk discontinuation. If this happens, please contact our Customer Service team to discuss options on 02 9901 4798 or service@farmbot.com.au.
Why has Farmbot not adopted 5G?
5G is designed for high-speed internet in short distances and is often found alongside 4G towers. However, it encounters challenges in coverage and building penetration due to its limited range and vulnerability to absorption or blockage by structures and trees. The signal's ability to travel only in a straight line from the tower makes it particularly susceptible to such obstacles. As well, weather conditions, such as rain, can further impede the effectiveness of 5G signals.
