Groups are quite helpful. They provide you the option to segment and tier your mailing list. They also allow you a way to create a discount program for certain people (Trade, Friends & Family, etc) so any time that person places an order they get an automatic discount.

Plus, if you choose to utilize a Campaign Monitor account through Figure, a truly wise and savvy business decision, syncing those Groups will allow for time saving processes during the release of your email campaigns.

Groups are also linked to the allocation sales module (Available where it applies—some sites don’t support all features) where you are able to designate different wines and different quantities available to the people in those groups and determine the date range that allocation will be active.

You will be able to setup your Groups as you wish and we provide some insights in the Best Practices section titled Valuable Insights for Group Creation. You may want to read that article before creating the process for naming and managing your groups.

A final note, once you setup your Group segmentation, there is a section in Settings>Customers that will allow you to designate what Group new customers are put in automatically when they create a new account or sign up for the mailing list. That group could be your lowest tier level, perhaps a group called “Waiting List”, or even your main “Mailing List”.
