When setting up brand new Campaign Monitor segments it is important to set rules filtering for Inactive customer accounts or Marketing Opt In “No” email addresses, so you don’t bother those customers who have requested to be left out of email communications.

You can learn more about these two details in the article, Customer account details page.

-In Campaign Monitor go to your “Lists & Subscribers” tab. Click on your synced list from Figure, usually this is named “Customers (Sync with Figure - DO NOT DELETE)”

-In the far right column, under the big “Add New Subscribers” button you will see a blue text link called “Segments”.

-In Segments, again on the right side you can click the “Create a new segment” button. Once in there, these are your initial rule setups to accommodate for Inactive customers and Marketing Opt In “No” email addresses:

>“Define a rule based on…”

>Groups > Contains > Tier 1 (group name**)

>AND

>Active_Account > does not contain > No

>OR (found on the far right side of the screen)

>Active_Account > Is not provided

>AND

>Marketing_Opt_In > Does Not Contain > No

>OR

>Marketing_Opt_In > Is not provided

Then name the Segment and hit the “Save and preview” button.

Once you have setup all these parameters, the segment rules would look like this:

Now, every time you sync the Figure list with Campaign Monitor, the Campaign Monitor Segments get updated to match your Groups in Figure. You should do this sync often, perhaps once a week, and definitely before you send out a campaign.

The sync in Figure can be found at Customers>Export>Sync all customers with Campaign Monitor. If you have a list over 1000 people it could take over 3 minutes to complete the sync.

**In the world of group names and using ‘contains’ in segment rules, Tier 10, Tier 100, and Tier 1000 can cause problems. It is best to name your Tiers by spelling out the numbers. Tier One, Tier Two, Tier Three.
