Why are you ending Quest 1 support?

Meta's Quest 1 sunset, struggling performance, and the future of FitXR

Earlier this year, Meta announced that they would soon begin removing support for Quest 1 features. This initially included social features like their home worlds, but ultimately will extend to a total removal of new feature/developer support at the close of 2023.

As FitXR is a live service app that relies on releasing frequent updates, the removal of Meta support makes it impossible for us to continue on the device. However, even if that weren't the case, Quest 1 already struggles greatly with supporting FitXR.

Over the last few weeks and months, we've made a host of optimisation changes to allow us to continue supporting Quest 1. But even with those, a number of members in our community have noticed performance issues creeping in (stuttering frames, slower loading times, hit detection troubles, etc). It's not just the big, flashy new features that Quest 1 struggles with - it's the routine, month-by-month updates that we need to make to keep FitXR up to date too.

Those issues will get significantly worse over time, to the point where FitXR is simply unusable on Quest 1. So we're trying to get ahead of that breaking point, and making sure you're left with a version of the app that still offers a lot of variety, but functions in a stable way.
