How can I assign a VIN to my device?

Fleetlane lets users manually assign a VIN to an OBD2 device to ensure accurate tracking of fuel, odometer, and location data when automatic detection fails due to the vehicle OEM ECU calibration.

Updated over 2 weeks ago

The assign VIN functionality allows users to input a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to an OBD2 device in cases where the device is unable to automatically detect it. This ensures that the devices connect quickly preventing time wasting back and forth's with the vehicle and multiple start-up cycles.

When to Use Assign VIN?

  1. You may use it for every device installation and pairing, as this will ensure the device connects immediately.

  2. You may also only choose to use the plug and play feature of the OBD2 device and only assign VIN if:

    1. The OBD2 device fails to automatically detect the VIN.

    2. You receive a message indicating a missing or incorrect VIN (ex: still connected to an old vehicle)

    3. You want to ensure a quick install.

How to Use the Assign VIN functionality?

Follow these steps to manually assign a VIN to your OBD2 device:

  1. Access the Telematics Settings page

  2. Identify the Device

    • Identify the device you choose to connect in a vehicle or that is not connecting.

    • Click on the icon to open the details menu, select Assign VIN.

  3. Enter the VIN Manually

    • In the popup, enter the correct 17-character VIN for the vehicle.

    • Double-check for accuracy before proceeding.

      • If the VIN is incorrect, the vehicle will not connect. This is very important.

  4. Confirm and Apply the VIN

    • Click Assign VIN to send the VIN to the OBD2 device.

    • The system will validate the entry and confirm the update.

  5. Verify the VIN Assignment

    1. If the device is already plugged in the OBD2 port

      • The vehicle must be powered on and started for approx. 45 secs

      • Once turned off, the vehicle will be CONNECTED in the app and available data should begin to come in.

    2. If the device is NOT yet plugged in.

      • Install in the OBD2 port of the appropriate vehicle

      • The vehicle must be powered on and started for approx. 45 secs

      • Once turned off, the vehicle will be CONNECTED in the app and available data should start to come in.

      • Check the app to confirm that the correct VIN is now assigned to the device.

Troubleshooting

If the Assign VIN functionality does not work as expected:

  • Ensure the OBD2 device is properly connected and red LED light is powered on.

  • Verify that the VIN you entered matches the vehicle you installed it in.

  • Contact customer support for further assistance if the issue persists.

By following the steps outlined above, you can manually assign a VIN to your OBD2 device and maintain seamless operation.
