Fleetpin supports importing locations. In this article you can learn what location importing is and how to set this up in your Fleetpin account.
What is location importing?
Location importing allows you to convert map shapes or geofences within GIS or other geospatial applications into Fleetpin compatible geofences. Essentially, these shapes can be used within Fleetpin to provide various information such as:
When assets entered / left locations
How long assets have been at locations
A record of jobs, customer locations, or other locations of interest
How do I import locations?
Importing locations involves a few quick steps within Fleetpin along with ensuring you have access to a third-party GeoJSON converter. GeoJSON is a common and standard GIS format used to store and transfer geospatial data.
Firstly, you will need to convert your GIS files to GeoJSON. Your GIS application may already support exporting location shapes to GeoJSON.
If you're unable to export GeoJSON, there are many great online tools for easily converting GIS maps to GeoJSON format such as Mapshaper.
Mapshaper conversion
To import your GIS map within Mapshaper you can either
Drop or paste files into the top box
Click select to choose your files from a folder
Your GIS map consists of several files. If using shape files, select at least the .dbf and .shp files. If your GIS map is a .zip file, then just use this.
When all files have been selected, they will be displayed. Click the import button to map these files.
Note: The two most important files are the .shp file (which contains the maps shapes / geometry), and the .dbf file (which contains the maps attributes, linking the map IDs and names to the corresponding polygons)
The imported GIS locations will now be mapped on screen. To export these to GeoJSON, click the export button at the top right of the window, select GeoJSON as a file format and then click export in this window.

Importing GeoJSON files
Once you have a valid GeoJSON file, this can be imported on Fleetpin. The Import function can be accessed by navigating to Admin β Locations from the sidebar and then clicking the import button at the top right of the locations page to open the Import locations dialog.
With the import locations dialog open, select your GeoJSON file and optionally select the field within this file that includes the value of the location names. (If no field is entered, then the default value: name will be used if this exists within the file.) Additionally, imported locations can be grouped together.
Once the import locations form has been completed, simply click import to transfer these locations to Fleetpin.
