Speed Limit Data

How We Source the Speed Limits Shown in Fleetpin

Updated over 8 months ago

Some of the functions and features in Fleetpin rely on knowing the speed limit, particularly when monitoring whether your assets have been speeding. We source existing data for this purpose, as it's much quicker and easier than determining it ourselves! This article will discuss how we obtain speed limit data, where it's used, and how you can set your own speed limits.

Where Is Our Speed Limit Data Sourced From?

We previously relied solely on OpenStreetMap for our speed limit data. Now, we have access to the New Zealand Speed Limit Registry and are updating our system to use this as the primary source, with OpenStreetMap as a fallback.

You will notice the updated speed limits in the trip activity view and your alerts—reports are the next, and final, part of Fleetpin to be updated in this regard. There shouldn't be a significant difference between these sections, but please feel free to get in touch if you have any concerns!

What Countries Do We Have Speed Limit Data For?

The New Zealand Speed Limit Registry, naturally, only applies to New Zealand. We continue to cover the rest of Oceania using data from OpenStreetMap.

How Frequently Is This Data Updated?

We update our data from these sources monthly.

Setting Custom Speed Limits

If you would like to set your own speed limits, this can be done by adjusting your assets or creating a geofence.

To set a custom speed limit for your asset, navigate to Admin > Assets and select your asset. Click on Profile, then choose Custom from the Speed limit drop-down menu. You can then enter your preferred limit, as shown:

To set a speed limit for an area using a geofence, follow the steps in this article to create a geofence, and then change the speed limit from Auto to Custom with your preferred value.
