Add naming conventions to have Focal automatically rename your assets across folders and sub-folders

Updated over a week ago

Using Naming Conventions will help you standardize and automate asset naming in your folders and sub-folders.

To start using naming conventions in the Focal Asset Library, start by going to Settings and Naming Conventions.

Go through the following steps to set up the naming convention:

  1. Add a name that makes it easy to identify the naming convention when you enable it in the asset library

  2. Choose a delimiter. This is what will separate the fields/variables in your naming convention.

  3. Build your naming convention by adding new fields and dragging them into the right order. You can use a combination of Media Columns (Settings -> Media Columns) and metadata that Focal detects automatically, like aspect ratio, resolution or video duration. After adding a metadata field, you can choose how the values get formatted (e.g. 9:16 or 9x16).

Once added to the naming convention, you can mark the media column fields as "required" on the right hand side. If any required field is missing for assets affected by the naming convention, Focal will automatically alert you in the Asset Library.

Once you have created the Naming Convention, navigate to the folder you would like to use it in, and select the Naming Conventions icon in the top menu. After enabling the feature for the folder, you will find all Naming Conventions you have set up in your space in the dropdown menu, and you can also automatically enable it for all sub-folders.

Once enabled, you will see asset names start getting updated in real-time, and alerts being added on the asset thumbnail is required media column values are missing. The naming convention applies to all existing files as well as new files being uploaded to the folders.
