What is Revenue?

  • Definition: Revenue is the income generated from normal business operations and includes discounts and deductions for returned merchandise. It is the top line or gross income.

  • In Plain English: Revenue is your total sales from all your revenue streams for the time period.

  • Example: If you sold 100 shoes for $50 each, your revenue would be 100x$50=$500

Why Should You Care?

  • Revenue is your ‘Top Line’ on your income statement and all of your expenses are then subtracted from this number to arrive at your net income.
