What Is FAQ Schema?

FAQ schema is a type of structured data markup that helps search and answer engines better identify and understand content that appears in a question-and-answer format. Proper implementation can help ensure that Google better understands our content.

It should be noted that since September 2023 only well-known, authoritative government-focused or health-focused websites are eligible for having the FAQs appear in search results. Due to our sites not necessarily being government-focused or health-focused, it’s very unlikely that our content will show as official answers in Google search results.

How to use the FAQ markup tool

There are two primary ways to mark content as an FAQ:

  1. Look for the FAQ icon in the Copilot text editing toolbar

  • Click on the "FAQ" icon. This will insert a new FAQ block into your content.

  • Type your FAQ content (questions and answers) directly into this new block. You can also drag and drop existing content into the FAQ block. This works similarly to how you add content to a sidebar embed

  1. Marking Existing Free Text as FAQ

You can quickly convert existing paragraphs into FAQ-rich content.

  • Select the Text: Highlight the free text you want to mark as an FAQ.

  • Apply FAQ Markup: From the inline toolbar that appears, click on the "FAQ" button. This will wrap the selected text in an FAQ block.

Note: Adding FAQ schema markup won't change the visual appearance of your content on our website. It's purely for optimizing how search engines understand and display your content.

Removing FAQ Markup

If you need to revert content that was previously marked as an FAQ:

  • Go to the FAQ block you wish to modify

  • Select the text and click the "FAQ" button again from the toolbar (or the "Remove" option ). This will remove the FAQ schema without deleting the content itself.

Important Considerations for FAQ Content

To ensure your FAQ schema is effective and displays correctly in search results, keep in mind that FAQ markup is intended strictly for content formatted as a clear question followed by its answer. Please avoid using the FAQ button for general content that doesn't follow a Q&A format, as it may negatively affect how search engines interpret the page.

  • Question and Answer Recognition:

    • Free Text: When free text is marked as an FAQ, our system will identify statements ending with a question mark as the question and the subsequent text as the answer.

    • Accordions: For accordions marked as FAQ, the panel heading will be recognized as the question, and the body of the accordion will be the answer.

  • Embed Types: While you can add various embeds within an FAQ block, we strongly recommend using plain text and images for optimal schema recognition.

  • Unsupported Elements : Unsupported Elements: For the current version, any hyperlinked text or jump-linked headings within the FAQ content will not appear in the FAQ markup. This means that the content itself will still appear on your website, it will not be included in the Schema.org markup.
