What is the Highlight Box feature?
A Highlight Box provides editors with a new storytelling capability to surface a concise, authoritative summary to selected content.
These summaries will also provide a consistent, structured format that improves extractability and citation within AI-generated answers.
Highlight Boxes can be placed anywhere within the body of a piece of content, and you can have multiple on the same page.
How to use the Highlight Box feature?
Start by creating a new story or editing an existing one.
Insert the Highlight Box
From the text editing toolbar, click on the “Highlight Box” button
The Highlight Box consists of a Heading and Contents. Complete these as desired.
Updating the Highlight Box
The Highlight Box can be updated at any time, replace the text as desired and save/publish the story.
Usage Guidelines
A highlight box works best when the article:
Explains a complex topic or breaking news story.
Answers a clear reader question ("What happened?", "Why does it matter?", "How does it work?", “What is the best product?).
Is longer than ~600 words or contains multiple subsections.
Covers fast-moving or breaking news topics that readers may want to understand quickly.
Includes practical service advice, explainers, or guides.
Best Practices
Place the highlight box immediately below the headline or intro so readers see it before scrolling.
For commerce, conversion rate testing is underway to determine if this is better than a placement under the PSG.
Keep it 2–5 concise bullet points (or roughly 50–100 words total).
For commerce, answer the question “what is the best” and use an affiliate link, consider adding a second option as well.
Ie. “After testing 21 products, I found that the best hydrating serum overall is the Dior Hydration Boost Serum and the best budget option is the Olay Hydro Serum.”
Focus on the most important information first; we should summarize the core questions the article answers and the value it provides.
Use simple, conversational language that mirrors how you would explain the story to a friend.
Include the article's primary topic or entity (person, product, trend, event, etc.) naturally.
Ensure every bullet adds new value rather than simply repeating the headline or introduction.
Write in complete, factual sentences. Avoid vague teasers or clickbait.
Update the highlight box if the article changes significantly so it always reflects the latest information.
Treat the highlight box as a summary, not a replacement for the article. The detail, nuance, and reporting should be reserved for the main body.
