What is a Callout?

A callout is a way of styling your article, by offsetting or otherwise changing the appearance of text or images. To use a callout, select the text or embed you wish to alter, then select the callout icon from the toolbar (the megaphone). This will enter the appropriate markdown. Next, we'll walk you through the callouts we have available for you.

Types of Callouts

Aside: This will offset the image or text to the side, without text wrapping around it.

Inset-right: The embed is inset to the right of the text, with the text wrapping to the left.

Inset-left: The embed is inset to the left of the text, with the text wrapping to the right.

Feature-small, feature-medium, feature-large: Images wrapped in one of these callouts will take a specified width outside of the content well. You have three options to choose from: Small, medium, and large.

Group-x number of images: This will display a grouping of images.

  • To add a group of images, select the callout icon and choose the group type you want to add. Note: The numbers in group-2, group-3, etc. correspond to the number of images you plan to add in that group. You can also stack images if you want to have a grid of six or eight on top of each other.

  • You have the option make the images in your group large, medium, or small. To do so, click the callout icon and choose the feature-x size you want to use. Do this after you’ve already created the group-x. Be sure to nest the group-x within the feature you’ve selected.

Additional Notes

  • Feature callouts can be used independently to display one piece of content without using a group.

  • If you are adding images to a group, they will look better if the images are all sized to the same dimensions.

  • Groups can be used independently to display up to four pieces of content, but they will render flush within the content well (design will vary by brand).

  • Groups need to be added before a feature is added to it so that the nesting renders appropriately.

  • Feature callouts cannot be nested within a group callout.

  • CNE embeds cannot currently be inserted inside a callout; they need to be added via current embed process in Copilot.

Formatting Pull Quotes

  • Highlight the text you want to display as a pull quote.

  • Click the quote icon on the toolbar (or Command//Ctrl Q).

  • Highlight the text again to include the new markdown for the quote.

  • Click the callout icon and choose the appropriate callout for your design (your brand might use large for a full-width pull quote, inset-left to offset the quote to the left, etc.).

Nested Callouts

Nested callouts require some manual adjustment to the markdown.

  • First, highlight the text/embed codes and choose your grouped callout.

  • Second, place your cursor below the text and choose your feature callout from the callout menu.

  • Manually arrange the text so that it looks like the below, with feature callout above and outside the group callout.

  • Nested callouts do require as many closeouts (+++) as there are callouts.
