We have added the ability to create anchor links in Copilot. Anchor links allow for hyperlinking to a specific location within an article. You are able to do so from within that very same article or from an external location. Adding them in Copilot is easy!

Creating an Anchor

To create an anchor, highlight the area of text you want to anchor and select the new Anchor icon.

You will then be prompted to name/label the anchor. Keep in mind that the name you chose here will be visible to readers at the end of the article's URL that includes an anchor.

Note: do not start your Anchor name with #. This will be automatically added. You cannot create anchor IDs that begin with a number.

You have now created an anchor ID within this piece of content. You can edit or delete this anchor by selecting the Anchor icon in the margin, and hitting the trash can icon. To edit, select the pencil.

Now that you've chosen where the anchor's destination and created an Anchor ID, we must link the anchor. Go back to the initial highlighted text and add that anchor ID. This will allow your initially highlighted text to jump down the page to where you need it.

Linking To Your Anchor

Linking From External Source

You can create the URL that will take readers directly to that part of page. To do so, simply attach your #anchorID to the end of that piece of content's live URL.

For the above example, the anchored URL would be

https://stag.vogue.com/article/first-dogs-champ-major-biden-move-into-white-house#top

You can then share or hyperlink this URL as if it were any other URL!

Linking From Internal Source

If you would like to anchor to a location within the same piece of content (ie. breaking a story up into chapters at the top of an article), you are able to add this using the hyperlink button (not the anchor link field). All you have to do is type in #anchorID into the hyperlink field. Make sure that the capitalization is consistent. The anchor ID is case sensitive.

Things to Note

  • Anchor links are removed for Apple News. Any text (like chapters, or "back to top") that link to an anchor remain as if they are normal text, but will not actually link to the anchor.
