When a user syndicates a story, Encore assigns the hreflang to the articles.

What is hreflang?

Hreflang is an SEO tool that enables us to tell search engines about multiple versions/translations of a story for different regions. Doing this helps search engines point our users to the most appropriate version of that story by language or region.

What is a canonical URL?

A canonical URL is the web address Google and other search engines consider the "source" for a web page. This helps improve SEO for pages that may be syndicated across several regions and/or have multiple URLs.

What are the benefits?

  • Directs audiences towards their local markets

  • Increases the reach of brands by improving the way content is ranked

  • Reduces concerns around duplicated content when distributing articles in the same language via Vogue Global Network

Encore also takes care of canonical URLs

As a part of the syndication workflow, editorial teams were required to input a canonical URL before publishing a story. This is no longer required as Encore now automatically generates the appropriate canonical URL.

For example, if Vogue India syndicated an article from Vogue UK with a proper hreflang, users located in India will see the Vogue India version when searching for the story. The table below explains the above scenario.

Vogue UK (source)

Vogue IN (target)
