How does GPS location tracking work? šŸ“

We know you depend on an accurate location for your Gabb Phone or Gabb Watch. Accurate GPS location relies on a combination of satellites, cell towers, and local networks working together to determine the location of your phone or watch.

In order for your child’s Gabb Phone or Gabb Watch to provide pinpoint accurate location, the device needs a clear line of sight to the sky. šŸ“” Obstacles like brick schools, metal roofs, or dense trees, can act like a blindfold, temporarily blocking satellite signals and reducing the accuracy of the location.

Location updates happen automatically every 15 minutes, but you can refresh your child's location at any time in the MyGabb app. šŸ”„

Why location can sometimes appear inaccurate

Sometimes you may notice that your Gabb device’s location may appear slightly off. Location accuracy mainly relies on GPS satellite signals, which can be blocked or weakened when your Gabb Phone or Gabb Watch doesn’t have a clear line of sight to the sky. šŸ“” This can affect how your child’s location shows up in the MyGabb app.

When your child is indoors or has an obstructed view of the sky (like a school with brick walls, a building with a metal roof, or surrounded by dense trees), the device may lose that direct line of sight with the satellites. When this happens, the device will temporarily estimate location using nearby cell towers. This can cause something called drift, where the GPS location shows as slightly outside your child’s actual location.

Drift is normal and usually resolves when your device reconnects to the satellites. After the Gabb Phone or Gabb Watch moves to an area with a clear line of sight to the sky, the GPS signal reconnects, and location updates are more accurate.

After the device has a clear line of sight to the sky, the location will update within 15 minutes. You can also manually refresh the location in the MyGabb app at any time by tapping Refresh.

Safe Zones šŸ

Safe Zones function like a digital fence around an area you define, such as your home or your child’s school. When your child’s Gabb Phone or Gabb Watch crosses this digital fence, we’ll send you a notification in the MyGabb app.

Sometimes you may get a Safe Zone alert even though your child is still inside the designated area. This can feel heart-stopping, but it’s usually caused by temporary GPS drift. When a device is indoors or surrounded by large obstacles like brick walls, metal roofs, or dense trees, it may momentarily report a location outside the Safe Zone perimeter.

How do I set up a Safe Zone?

You can set up a Safe Zone in a few easy steps:

  1. Log in to the MyGabb app on your (parent’s) smartphone.

  2. Tap Safe Zones.

  3. Tap the plus sign āž• in the bottom-right corner of the map.

  4. Enter your Safe Zone details, then tap Save.

How do I edit an existing Safe Zone?

Here's how to edit an existing Safe Zone:

  1. Log in to the MyGabb app.

  2. Tap Safe Zones.

  3. Tap on the Safe Zone you want to edit, then tap on the address.

  4. Make the changes to your Safe Zone, then tap Save.

Missed Safe Zone alerts

There may be times where your child temporarily leaves a Safe Zone, goes back into the Safe Zone, and you don’t get a notification. This is because location updates every 15 minutes. If a child leaves the Safe Zone and returns between the scheduled 15-minute updates, both location snapshots may show the child inside the Safe Zone, and you wouldn’t get a notification. Think of it like taking intermittent photos rather than a continuous live feed.

šŸ‘‰ Why does location refresh every 15 minutes? We made the decision to have location update every 15 minutes so that we could balance accurate location reporting with battery life. We want to balance safety and security with making sure your child’s device has enough battery when they need it most.

Can I manually refresh my child's GPS location? šŸ”„

GPS location automatically updates every 15 minutes, but you can update the location manually at any time. Here’s how:

  1. Log in to the MyGabb app on your smartphone.

  2. Tap on your device.

  3. Tap the Refresh button šŸ”„ in the bottom-left corner of the map. The location of your Gabb device will update.

Location not updating in the MyGabb app? Make sure your Gabb Phone or Gabb Watch is logged into your child’s correct Gabb ID.

GPS signal strength & what it means šŸ“”

The MyGabb app now shows signal strength at the top of the map to help you see how strong the connection is. Weak signal strength may be why location updates are taking a bit longer, showing drift, or don’t appear exactly where you expect.

Strong signal

  • What it means: The device has a clear connection to GPS satellites.

  • What happens: Location updates are accurate and on time, just like you’d expect.

Weak signal

  • What it means: The device may be indoors or under something that blocks the sky, like a brick building, a metal roof, or lots of trees.

  • What happens: The location might drift or take longer to update.

    • If the signal is weak, a popup will appear to explain why GPS might not be perfectly accurate.

If you see a location that you don’t think is accurate, or is drifting, first check the MyGabb app to see if your child’s phone or watch has a weak signal. If it does have a weak signal, it may not report a completely accurate location due to being blocked from view of the satellites. Once the Gabb Phone or Gabb Watch moves somewhere with a clear line of sight to the sky, the signal strength should improve.

GPS best practices šŸ”

GPS is a powerful tool to help you keep tabs on your child’s location, but it’s just one part of a bigger safety picture. Here are some best practices to get the most out of Gabb’s location services:

  • Check the signal: Check the signal in the MyGabb app to see if your Gabb device has a strong connection.

  • Refresh: If the location looks off, a quick refresh in the app often fixes it.

  • Restart: Restarting the device can help re-establish GPS connections, especially after updates.

  • Combine tools with connection: Real safety comes from combining location services with communication and clear expectations with your child.

šŸ”‘ Think of location services as a safety snapshot, not a live video feed. When used alongside trust, communication, and a plan, GPS is a reliable tool that gives parents confidence without causing unnecessary worry.

GPS location troubleshooting 🚨

If your child’s location looks delayed, inaccurate, or can’t be found, try these troubleshooting steps.

Quick check for all Gabb devices

  1. Make sure the Gabb device is turned on and charged. šŸ”‹

  2. Open the MyGabb app on your (parent’s) smartphone.

  3. Tap on your child’s device, then tap the Refresh button šŸ”„ in the bottom-left corner of the map.

  4. Verify the signal strength of your child’s Gabb device. When you log in to the MyGabb app, it will show you if the signal is strong or weak. If the signal strength is weak, this likely means that the device doesn’t have a clear line of sight to the GPS satellites.

If the location signal strength is strong, but the location still can’t be found, restart your Gabb device, then refresh the location in the MyGabb app again.

GPS location FAQs ā“

Why isn’t my child’s location updating?

Why this happens

GPS is a complex system involving your device, satellites, cell towers, and local networks. In order to have the most accurate location, the device needs a clear line of sight to the sky. šŸ“”

If the Gabb Phone or Gabb Watch doesn’t have a clear line of sight to the sky (like if it’s inside a brick school, under a metal roof, near dense trees, etc.), the satellite signal can be weakened or blocked. When this happens, location updates may rely on nearby cell towers, which aren’t as accurate as satellites.

Location updates happen every 15 minutes to balance location accuracy with battery life. This means that your child’s location will not update continuously. If you want a location update in between the 15 minutes, tap the Refresh button šŸ”„ in the MyGabb app to refresh the location.

What to check

  • Confirm that your Gabb Phone or Gabb Watch is turned on.

  • Check the GPS signal strength in the MyGabb app.

  • If the signal is weak, the device may be indoors or under heavy cover.

What to expect

Location updates resume automatically once the device reconnects to the GPS satellites, typically when the child moves outdoors or away from obstructions.

When to contact Support

If the device shows a strong signal but location does not refresh after multiple attempts.

Why is my child’s location inaccurate or showing the wrong place?

Why this happens

To achieve pinpoint accurate location, GPS needs a clear line of sight to the sky. šŸ“” Obstacles like brick schools, metal roofs, or dense trees can weaken or block the satellite signal.

When the satellite signal is weakened or blocked, the device estimates location using the nearest cell towers. This can cause temporary drift, where the location appears slightly outside where it’s actually located.

What to know

  • Estimated cell tower locations are less precise than GPS satellite locations.

  • Drift is most common when your device is indoors or in large buildings like schools.

What to expect

Location accuracy improves automatically once the device reconnects to the satellite signal when it has a clear line of sight to the sky. šŸ“”

Why did I get a Safe Zone alert even though my child was still at school?

Why this happens

Safe Zones function like a digital fence. When GPS signals are blocked inside a large building, the device may momentarily report a location outside the Safe Zone’s digital fence because it has to rely on cell towers for location. This can trigger an alert even though your child has not left the area.

What to check

  • Check the GPS signal strength in the MyGabb app.

  • If the signal is weak, the device may be indoors or under heavy cover.

What to expect

Once your Gabb device has a clear line of sight to the sky and reconnects to GPS satellites, the location typically returns to the correct position.

Why didn’t I receive a notification when my child left and returned to a Safe Zone?

Why this happens

To balance accuracy and battery life, location updates every 15 minutes, rather than continuously.

What to know

Location updates work like snapshots. If your child leaves and returns between the 15-minute check ins, their location will show inside the Safe Zone in both snapshots. In that case, we won’t send you a notification.

What to expect

This is designed to extend battery life while maintaining reliable tracking. Keep in mind that you can refresh your child’s location at any time to get a real-time view of where they’re at:

  1. Log in to the MyGabb app.

  2. Tap on your device.

  3. Tap the Refresh button šŸ”„ in the bottom-left corner of the map.

Is GPS location tracking always exact?

What to know

Location services are a powerful tool for parents to see where their kids are. However, GPS depends on environmental conditions, signal strength, and update intervals.

For the most accurate results, GPS needs a clear line of sight to the sky. Indoor environments and heavy obstructions can temporarily reduce the accuracy of your device’s location.

What to expect

Location services work best when combined with a plan. Real safety comes from the connection between parent and child, supported by informed expectations about how GPS technology works.
