When creating a game in Gamoteca, there may be times when you want to share submissions made by one player with another or refer back to previous screens that a player has already progressed past. Either action is possible in Gamoteca, where you are able to take an input from one screen and quote or show it again at a later point in the game. We call this quoting.

Quoting is useful to enable collaborative learning between players, meaning you are able to show user-generated content from one player with another player (or players). Content from players can also be shared with a facilitator or even be self-reviewed by the player for reflection later in the game.

In Gamoteca, aside from simply Completing a screen, there are four types of actions or inputs that the Player can create - making a choice, writing a short message, sharing a photo, or sharing a video, these are called Player tasks.

The Quoting option works by capturing these actions and presenting them again to the same player or to a different game player at a later stage of the game. The choice option can additionally be used for branching and conditional scoring, read more about Preconditions here.

Let’s take a look at an example: You’re creating a two-player game, with Player A and Player B, and you want the players to introduce themselves to each other.

1. The first step is to add Screen 1 with a Player Task for both Player A and Player B like a Video Upload introducing themselves and Screen 2 for both Player A and Player B where they will see their partner's introduction video.

2. Once Player A and B have finished recording their video, it’s time to Quote their video to their game partner, for them to be able to see their partner’s introduction.

3. On Screen 2 for both players (where you want the players to watch each other’s videos), go to the 'Quote answer for other screen' section and select the opposite game partner’s introduction video screen. (Quote Player B’s introduction in Player A’s screen and vice versa).

4. When using Quoting, you have to remember to set the Preconditions. To quote something you have to ensure that the specific player task has already been completed. Read more about Preconditions here.

Tips:

  • In the above example, you could set Preconditions in such a way that:

    • The video is shared as soon as Player A or Player B upload a video, OR

    • The video is shared only when both Players upload their video (you will need to add two pre-conditions

  • Another useful situation is when in a one player game you want the player to reflect on a previous response. You follow the same processas usedin a two player scenario, but you choose to quote the solo player’s task.

  • You can create the game pathway to “release” the quoted content later in the game, i.e. it does not have to immediately follow the screens where the content was created. e content was created.
