Create learning experiences that allow for progression dependent on buddy feedback or progression that is independent of buddy feedback

On Gamoteca you can create different engagement experiences by playing around with the pre-conditions (to learn about pre-conditions, refer to this support article) and allowing one player to progress without feedback or immediate engagement with their learning buddy.

We will show you how to create two learning experiences, where the first version is a two-player independent version, where Player 1 can progress without feedback and receives it as and when completed by Player 2. (Note: In this version, Player 1 completes self-evaluations and gives themselves feedback); and the second is a two-player dependent version, where Player 1 cannot progress without feedback from Player 2.

Part 1: Two-player Feedback Independent TECA

Let’s look at how we can organise the pre-conditions that allow Player 1 to progress onto the next activity, without waiting for Player 2’s action. Player one will receive Player 2’s feedback or action, as and when they send it.

  1. Open the TECA editor

  2. Create two roles “Player 1” and “Player 2”

  3. Create “Task 1” for Player 1

  4. Create “Response to Task 1” for Player 2.

  • Make sure you are quoting Player 1’s “Task 1” (to learn about quoting, refer to this support article)

  • Make sure you set the pre-conditions as “After Player 1 has completed Task 1”

  • Make sure the relation between them is set to “and” (this is the default)

5. Create a “Response to Task 1” for Player 1 (self-evaluation)

  • Make sure you are quoting Player 1’s “Task 1”

  • Make sure you set the pre-conditions as “After Player 1 has completed Task 1”

  • Make sure the relation between them is set to “and” (this is the default)

6. From Player 1’s “Response to Task 1| Self Evaluation” click the blue “+” button to create a new screen for Player 1 – this will be how Player 1 will see the feedback they gave themselves on their first task.

7. From Player 2’s “Response to Task 1” click the blue “+” button to create a new screen for Player 1– this will be how Player 1 will see Player 2's feedback.

  • Make sure you are quoting “Player 2: Response to Task 1” — this is where Player 2 has shared their feedback.

  • Make sure the pre-conditions are set to “Player 2 has completed Response to Task 1”

This way, Task 1 is sent to both Player 1 (for self-evaluation) and Player 2 (for feedback). Player 1 can move on with the next few activities, even if Player 2 has not responded. Player 1 will receive Player 2’s feedback as and when it is given.

Now, we will teach you how to allow Player 1 to progress to the next task without receiving feedback from Player 2.

8. Create a new “Task 2” screen for Player 1

  • Make sure the pre-conditions are set to “allow when Player 1 has completed Self-Evaluation | Feedback” OR Player 2 has completed “Response to Task 1”

  • If you hover over “Task 2”, both the previous screens should light up indicating that the pre-conditions are set correctly

This way, “Task 2” is unlocked for Player 1, with or without Player 2’s feedback, allowing Player 1 to progress through the rest of the activities without being held back by Player 2.

9. Follow the same steps for creating additional screens for Task 2, as you did for Task 1.

Remember to check all the pre-conditions!

Part 2: Two-player Feedback Dependent TECA

Let’s look at how we can organise the pre-conditions that only allow Player 1 to progress onto the next activity, after receiving Player 2’s action. Player 1 will receive Player 2’s feedback or action, as and when they send it.

  1. Open the TECA editor

  2. Create two roles “Player 1” and “Player 2”

  3. Create “Task 1” for Player 1

  4. Create “Response to Task 1” for Player 2.

  • Make sure you are quoting Player 1’s “Task 1”

  • Make sure you set the pre-conditions as “After Player 1 has completed Task 1”

  • Make sure the relation between them is set to “and” (this is the default)

5. From Player 2’s “Response to Task 1” click the blue “+” button to create a new screen for Player 1– this will be how Player 1 will see Player 2's feedback.

  • Make sure the pre-conditions are set to when “Player 2 completes Response to Task 1”

6. For Player 1’s “Player 2 Feedback for Task 1” click the blue “+” button to create a new screen for Player 1 — this will be how Player 1 will see Player 2’s feedback.

7. If you hover over the “Task 2” screen, only the “Player 2, Feedback for Task 1” screen should light up, indicating that the next screen will only appear once Player 1 has received Player 2’s feedback.

8. Follow the same steps for creating additional screens for Task 2, as you did for Task

Remember to check all the pre-conditions!
