What is 3DS, and how does it work?

If you've ever bought anything online, you've likely seen 3DS before. It's shorthand for 3-D Secure, a bit of tech that stops your card being used fraudulently.

Essentially, your transaction is automatically checked by your bank, and they decide if it looks fraudulent.

If they're not sure, they can block this one transaction, without needing to block your card entirely, and you can easily authorise the transaction from your banking app, by SMS, or through the 3-D secure tech directly.

It was created by Visa and MasterCard, and it's often branded as 'Verified by Visa' or 'MasterCard SecureCode', and it's used by many online retailers and apps.
