What to know about written consent for Charitable Fundraising Platforms

Updated over 3 weeks ago

About Written Consent

The California Department of Justice has rolled out Assembly Bill 488, which regulates online charitable fundraising platforms and the charities that partner with them.

As a CCV, retrieving written consent from charities will further strengthen your partnership across charities and allow you to compliantly co-brand with each of them.

As of January 1, 2025, some charitable platforms that operate in California (including a website, mobile app, computer software, or other online entities) will be required to request written consent from participating charities in order to use their name across programs and raise donations on their behalf

This applies to the following types of fundraising:

  • Round-up donations

  • Crowdfunding

  • Charitable sales promotions, coventuring or cause marketing campaigns

What nonprofits see

When nonprofits create an account, they will automatically be opted in to provide consent in order to participate in some programs on Change. They may opt out anytime by unchecking a program.

Written Consent API

API usage for written consent is available. You may contact the Change team for guidance.
