Reading a format

What every part of a format page means, and which parts decide whether to make it.

A format page has four parts. Two tell you whether the format works, and two tell you whether you can make it.

The timeline

The structure, split into parts. Click one and you see it alone: what is said, and what is on screen at that moment.

Some formats are silent with no voiceover, and they say so. For those, the on-screen column is the whole format.

Read the timeline before the numbers. If the structure does not suit what you do, no outlier score makes it worth making.

The numbers

Average outlier across every video using this format. That is how far these videos beat their own channels' normals, on average, so a high figure means the structure travels rather than that one big account used it.

Videos and creators. Many videos from few creators is a format one or two people are working; the same count across many creators is a format that transfers.

Rank. Top 10% or top 25% against the rest of the library.

Posting activity

A thirty-day chart of how much this format is being used, with how that compares to its usual pace.

This is the timing signal. A format posting at twice its usual pace is being picked up right now. A quiet one tells you how long it has been since anything new appeared, which is useful in both directions: quiet can mean finished, or it can mean uncrowded.

Film cost

The part that decides whether you actually make it.

Whether it works with no face on camera. Whether you need anyone else. Whether it needs a product in hand or a particular location. Whether the edit is simple, moderate or heavy.

A format in the top 10% that needs a location you do not have is worth less to you this week than a proven one you can film at your desk. Filter on this first if your bottleneck is production rather than ideas.

Hook mix

Which kinds of opening this format tends to use. Useful when you want the structure but a different entry point.

The examples

Every video using the format, sortable by newest, most viewed or top outliers. Filter to creators in your own niche to see it working on subjects close to yours.

Making your version

Recreate this format sends it to chat with your brand and voice attached, keeping the beats and swapping in your topic.
