Visa: Why is my Visa not working?

Learn the most common reasons your Visa reward card may be declined and how to fix it.

Written by Andrew Flaro

It can be frustrating when your card doesn’t work at checkout. In most cases, there’s a simple reason—and an easy fix. This guide walks you through what to check so you can use your reward successfully.

Check your card details first

Make sure the information you enter matches your card exactly.

  • Use the same name and billing address you entered when claiming the card

  • Double-check for typos or missing details

Even small differences can cause a transaction to be declined.

Common reasons your card may be declined

The purchase is more than your balance

  • If the total purchase is higher than your remaining funds, the transaction will decline.

Tip: Make sure your purchase is equal to or less than your available balance.

The merchant is outside the United States

  • Visa reward cards can only be used with U.S.-based merchants.

  • This includes online stores based outside the U.S.

If the company is not U.S.-based, the card will not work.

Your card has expired

  • Visa reward cards have an expiration date.

  • Once expired, the card can no longer be used.

Check your card and make sure it’s still valid before trying again.

The purchase is restricted

Some types of transactions are not allowed.

You cannot use your card for:

  • Cash transfers (e.g., Apple Cash, Venmo, PayPal, or similar apps)

  • Buying other gift cards

  • Gambling, dating sites, or illegal transactions

If your purchase falls into one of these categories, it will be declined.
