Add Geometries to Drawing Layers

How to swap geometries to different drawing layers

Written by Holly Conrad Smith

Keep each building's footprints, massing, and landscape on the right layer, so hiding or locking one building never touches another. Every geometry you draw lives on a drawing layer.

Set the active layer

New geometries go on the active drawing layer. The active layer has a filled circle at the left of its row in the Layer Palette.

Click the circle on another drawing layer to make it active.

In Giraffe 6, you can also open the layer menu and choose Set active layer.

Clicking a layer's name only selects the row. It doesn't change the active layer.

Move geometries to another layer

  1. Select the geometries on the map.

  2. In the Properties palette, click the Layer field.

  3. Pick a drawing layer. The geometries move onto it.

To move them onto a new layer, choose + New Layer at the bottom of the list, type a name, and click Create. You can also type a new name in the search box and choose + Create "[name]". The new layer becomes active.

In Giraffe 6, you can also select the geometries on the map, open the layer menu on the destination drawing layer, and choose Move N features here. Choose Copy N features here to keep the originals where they are.

Cut and paste geometries to another layer

  1. Select the geometries on the map.

  2. Press Cmd/Ctrl+X to cut.

  3. Set the destination layer as active.

  4. Press Cmd/Ctrl+V to paste.

Giraffe shows "Cannot paste features on a locked layer" when the active drawing layer is locked. Unlock it first.

Empty drawing layers

A drawing layer with no geometries shows (Empty) after its name in the Layer Palette.
