Site Area Values

How Giraffe calculates different site areas

Written by Holly Conrad Smith

Site areas call properties of the site as defined by your project boundary.

This includes both the basic site area and calculated areas such as the building footprint, roads and hardscape, landscape and open space, and even rooftop landscape!

These values are used in Urban, and site area components in Analytics

Site Total Area

total area within the site boundary

Building Total Area

Sum of area of level 1 of all geometries with building type usages

Landscape Total Area

sum of area of all ground-level geometries with landscape type usages

Paved Total Area

sum of all geometries with Paving type usages

Road Total Area

sum of all geometries with road and path type usages

Rooftop Landscape Total Area

sum area of all landscape with ‘force stack’ on

Site Ex All total area

total site area - landscape total area - paved total area - road total area

Site ex building total area

total site area - building total area

Union all total area

building total area + landscape total area + paved total area + road total area

Site areas for each precinct, stage, or parcel

Use the Group by drop-down in Analytics to work out site areas and FSR/FAR for each sub-precinct, stage, or parcel. Group by any property your geometries share. This can be a custom property, like a "Precinct" property you add to each building and landscape polygon.

When Analytics is grouped, Giraffe calculates these site areas separately for each group, using only the geometries in that group:

  • Building Total Area

  • Landscape Total Area

  • Paved Total Area

  • Road Total Area

  • Rooftop Landscape Total Area

  • Union all total area

Site Total Area is the area inside the project boundary. It shows the same value in every group.
